    Leather lace "permanent" knot

Assuming there's a need to keep the sleeve tight, you could use the same technique I use for "leathering" the eye of a wire splice. Just heave the lacing tightly and having very slightly enlarged the last of the hole pairs, cross and tuck the ends so that the ends can make another half-turn...

    WANTED a Bonsai

Yup, that is certainly do-able for a lot of deciduous and for Larch too. Taking is more successful , this time of the year, if fewer roots have to be chopped and the rootball is large. But the thing will still need settling and at least a year of full growth, before styling can begin. And...

    WANTED a Bonsai

It's a sad fact that far too many of the younger trees being marketed as Bonsai, end up dead very soon, because of lack of knowledge and understanding. The Art is long. If your friends heart is really set on embarking down this route on something other than a whim, then the kindliest thing...

What do people use for severe cramps??

I can identify with some of the complaints as per the OP. The Oldtimers post 24 says most of what I have to say. The vivid descriptions of the spasms, I can verify 100%. But, I also have reason to believe that it's my hereditary condition HNPP, and it is the issues with that condition, that...

Thread tip for canvas and leather hand sewing

Here's one tip I came across in a sailmaking book. A really great alternative to the pre-waxed polyester thread used with the Speedy Stitcher, is to get ones hands on a half fathom of 14mm diam. 3 strand polyester rope as source material and strip the whole thing down to the sewing thickness...

    Damn Dog ate my...

By accident and as a puppy, our Lab got shut into the garage for a half hour and ate most of the clip-on accessories of the vacuum cleaner, which was dead easy for him, having already digested most of the kitchen floor covering. Ceeg

    Iron balls!

Ships binnacles were fitted with soft Iron spheres each side of the mag compass, unless it was an aircraft carrier, which usually had just 1. Maybe possible to find from a Nauticalia/Junk store. Ceeg

I do the wire splicing for 2 locally based Historic ships, nobody seems to have the know how, anyway, the strands tend to flick back and savage my wool shirts, that and getting tar over my clobber.

Rivetting my Stitches - or Stitching my Rivetting?

Or...you could bin the stitching altogether and use a large, slack handful of round headed,copper-effect upholstery nails. Made one for a mates old hickory, four parallel rows of 'em, down the back edge. Looked fantastic with a triangle hole for carry inboard of a belt. Weighed a ton! Ceeg

    Leather sheaths

For the two loose ends, I can only speak of my own ways of joining up the sections. It really depends on the type of sheath...f'instance the only way of sewing a leather upper to a wooden lower, is to mark out the stitches and literally haul the two edges together. Same thing applies with a...

    Woolen garment to be dyed

My wife is resolved to changing the colour of a hardly worn, but treasured jumper, from off white, to an assertive shade of violet. Never having done anything like this before, she has ordered some Dylon dye. "It's got salts in it and you just chuck it in the machine", apparently . Anyone...

    Helle Eggen???

It's done for the reasons just as the fellah's say. Personally, I boil up a tall tin and just dip the item for 3 or 4 seconds, having learnt the hard way that any more dipping time than this, will tend to bring in some pretty dramatic amounts of shrinkage. I found it best to hang the item on a...

    Helle Eggen???

Ref that finger-guard. I had to dock the end, a few mm, having found that due to a bit of shrinkage, it wouldn't fit into a hot-waxed dipped sheath. Ceeg
