    Suggestions for a legal carry

With a half-hawk larger blade and a smaller pen blade and at the lower end of the budget scale ... the Rough Rider Coalminer. It's hefty and looks old fashioned . 20 quid-ish Ceeg

    Most used knots?

Off topic,,,,,couldn't resist. for DWH I have never seen that before, it certainly looks right for the job. The arrangement works on principles similar to Ashleys Quarter-pole hitch. Regards Ceeg

    Most used knots?

These days I seem to be clapping-on Constrictors more than anything else, left , right and centre. I find the Boa at least an equal to a Double Constrictor in grip, though possibly not quite as flexitile. Regards All Ceeg

    Guess the wood...

I go for Oriental Plane....patchy, smoothish bark...arrrgh, but its patches don't look pink.

    Border or Northumbria

I had never thought that Barbours could ever get to a stage of dereliction...the odd patching of a bit of binder twine and bent fuse wire is just an extreme patination, surely. My preference is the Northumbria, it's the only one I've ever had, cos it has the longest back and its generous...

    William Rogers knife set info

Nice find. I hope your project goes well. Methinks that sheath had a previous life holding knife, pliers and marlinespike. Regards Ceeg

    Barometers?

If the OP does get his hands on a former sea-going Baro, it is sure to have been witness to many meteorological ups and downs. I'm pretty certain that any former mariners will have mixed memories of situations in which a rising baro reading was hoped for. As a young man, I had the benefit of...

You know you’re getting old when……

...When the word, "cherish" comes to mind and lodges a glow of warmth in the pit of your belly, a dryness in the throat and dampness to your eyes. And, somewhere in those feelings, there is a sense of gladness that you've had the chances you had and have lived through all those and feel...

    Favourite bird

I take it that no-one else has ever heard of the " oooooohmee gooolie" bird as mentioned in many 1960s Rugby songs....sorry all, I just couldn't resist the temptation. Chuckles and regards Ceeg

    A caterpillar first.

Well I never......a few moments ago in my garden, I saw my first Privet Hawk-Moth caterpillar wandering amid a pile of fallen rose petals. What an impressive sight, it has quite made my evening. Regards All Ceeg

    BONSAI AND BUSHCRAFT

If you don't mind me coming in on this one,SaraR. Given an understanding of the techniques for collecting stock and their necessary aftercare, it is possible to extract seedlings , saplings and right the way up to large trees. Assessing root mass and minimising damage are two of the important...

    BONSAI AND BUSHCRAFT

I must have missed this thread when it was first posted. Hats-off for getting into Bonsai in the first place. You're right about it being a challenge, this is the phase that often puts folk right off after a couple of seasons. There are loads and loads of sorrowful stories where the failure of...

    A Moral Dilemma

Surely, and perhaps to explain a little, for the benefit of any who feel it difficult to understand the idea of hunting, ( here I quote Gough Thomas's Gun Book)... "this is the pleasure taken from a good gun, to me above all, the intimate, personal weapon through whose instrumentality I have...

Is it stil worth carrying a compass?

I've waited quite a while to come in on this thread...something to do with the to-ing and fro-ing of instances and incidents, those many right and true stacked sheafs of what happened. or could have...on which I have no comment to make. But I will relate that the compasses with which I am most...
