Dave Budd tells us about managing and processing the Wood he needs...

Glad people liked the article. Although I don't earn anything from the woods in terms of woodland products, it's great to be able to use the material myself as far as I can. I had a facebook conversation with another hippy/blacksmith friend the other day about being able to make the tools to...

    Hand forged awl

I do make awls, but mostly proper leatherworking awls that fit into a wooden handle. Those look more like pointed awl-like objects that renactors and blacksmiths make (rather than an actual tool maker). I can't see the working ends in the picture, but are you after something to make holes in...

    Sold MSR Whisperlite stove

I bought this a few years ago, but have only used it a handful of times (I normally have a forge whenever I'm camping!). It comes with a jet for 'white gas and automobile gasoline' and a jet for 'kerosene and jet fuel', fuel bottle, servicing kit and foil windshield; basically everything but the...

For Sale Throwing knives and spikes

Since I had an order for a set and I seem to have them in mind right now, I knocked up a couple of sets of throwers :) 18's and over only, prices include Paypal fees and UK delivery (1st class on one knife, RMSD on a set of 3) I have two sets of up for grabs, though I'm willing to split the...

Does anyone know of a supplier of barrel (round) wedges for axes/hammers.

I don't like them to be honest. They appear on a lot of engineers hammers and cheap axes these days. I think it's because they spread the wood in every direction at once, whereas a flat wedge just spreads it in two directions at a time; so it's cheaper than having two wedges in an axe and allows...

    For Sale Throwing Axes (mostly)

Here's part two of my excavation of rusty old throwing things :) I think this is the last of them (though I'm sure I had more random spikes, clevers, sickles and things that I used to throw!!). Loose rust has been removed and edges restored for throwing. The handles have suffered a bit from...

Does anyone know of a supplier of barrel (round) wedges for axes/hammers.

Silverline and Draper make them, so anywhere that sells those tools can order them in for you. I've had them in multi-size packs in the past. https://www.silverlinetools.com/en-GB/Product/ProductDetail?ModelName=474098 Of course, you could buy a length of steel pipe, grind an edge onto the...

    Sold Throwing knives and axes

Sorry Tony, I fully intended to drop you a message after I posted the thread up. Then I forgot! oops. If I find anything else flingy, then I shall be sure to (try and remember to) tell you first ;) I think I've still got some homemade throwing axes and a cold steel spike somewhere Mike and...

It is a Gizmo, what on Earth is it ?

the faces of the hammer are dressed to create the right shape dent when married with the anvil face, so yes it is a specific hammer for the job. Also, sod's law says that if you just grabbed a random hammer when needed, you would only find a chewed up lump hammer and a tiny tack hammer!

Funnily enough, that was my first thought too! :D

It is a Gizmo, what on Earth is it ?

hahaha love it! It's a scythe peening anvil and hammer set. Somebody has decided to bolt them together so they don't lose the bits when the put them down

    Sold Throwing knives and axes

Haha, sorry there aren't. They were prototypes that i thought about making, but never got around to. I'll be making some shiny new throwing knives in the next month or so, but they will be full price of course.

    Sold Throwing knives and axes

I've been clearing out a shed that collapsed a few years ago and found a bucket full of throwing knives and things in it. I've not thrown a knife (on purpose) in years, so offering them here. Since they were in a bucket of water for a few years, there has been, ahem, a little rusting and...

    Throwing knives

From memory cold steel did some decent low cost ones, but it must be 20 years since i looked! A bif of mild with a point on the end will do, if you dont mind straightening them. Look online for metal suppliers, even ebay. Something like 30x6mm would be good.

    Knife-Machete-Sword

well, some are ;) Through out the last few thousand years of iron swords in Europe they have been made from a single bit of iron with hammered edges, iron core with steel edges, laminated/twisted core (normally iron and steel) with steel edges, and for the largest part of the time just a...

    Knife-Machete-Sword

big ol' can of worms there! A big knife is more difficult to make than a small knife, both physically (more metal to move/grind) and technically (warpages, etc), but a sword is entirely different beast. Swords aren't just big knives, though some are closer than others; they have different...

    Leather liner for knife scales?

Assuming that you plan to glue the leather to the tang, then that is the moisture barrier. Steel, then glue, leather, glue, wood is the normal order from tang outwards. In use, the leather would absorb moisture and would swell (giving a ridge above the tang/scale or potentially rot from...
