Well firstly well done Greg. I know you chaps are not really into survival & that Bushcraft is totally different, but I really think that you would be far better off learning & practicing more sustainable primitive methods, especially concerning making fire. Woodsmen & woods women did not use charred cloth outside of the city home.
With respect & regards, Keith.

Future lessons cover bow drill, charred natural tinders etc as well as flint knives, natural cordage etc - this is just the BASIC course :)
For my improve fish hook I made a Mesolithic "gorges" from a blackthorn spike and a bone splinter. You can go as primitive or natural as you like...

Well done, I have looked at the thread on BC USA a lot when it was first posted up. And thought it was a great idea. Been doing them for ages just need to get the camera out and record things I guess :) I tend to get lost in the practice and forget to pick up a camera or bring one along. :)

I have also been doing the Paul Kirtley courses and following those teachings and other instructors of the years. I got into Bushcraft from the survival side (military) and progressed my learning from there.
I have a face for radio :)

I was going to post about something I saw on BushcraftUSA and that was the working though 101 Skills You Need to Survive in the Woods by Kevin Estela which I thought was a really interesting idea.
It is going to be one of my resolutions to do this and to work out a skill tree so can build on skills.

Good idea, our group has such a skills list. Gives members something to aim for.
Keith.

Nice, did not know about this. Always good to run and expand your skills through such lists from time to time. Either primitive or less primitive ;)

Traditional German boy scouts also have such lists. Who didn't learn the skills doesn't get the neckerchief.

Ok, apologies in advance for how this will sound. I think we need a tech tree like a computer game.
I was flicking through Advanced Bushcraft and he has a section on weaving including simple looms.
My point is that we have the basic skill of twisting natural cordage and then jumping to weaving seems to miss the steps in between. Like hand spinning and a simple rope walk.
Both of which should only need the ability to make holes and cut discs off logs unless I missing something. The thing I cannot work out is the top bit of the spindle which in the modern versions is a little metal hook.
