    Cleaning up.

Sphagnum moss, then a rinse. Better than a scourer (which gets greasy), doesn't involve any detergents, is normally plentiful and has antiseptic properties.

    Epic by Nextec

Epic is available in lots of different fabrics. It is basically a normal fabric that has been treated with silicone in such a way that each thread is coated individually. The fabric will therefore shed water much more effectively than a similar fabric treated with a DWR on the outside only...

Nikwax and Gore-tex, The infamous saying.

The simple answer is that you are both right! Goretex works by having a plastic coating on a facing material. The coating attracts water to one side (the inside) and moves it to the other (outside), where it evaporates. The plastic membrane may be protected from damage by another layer stuck...

    To tarp or tent?

Thanks mate! It's not that hard, have a go, you might surprise yourself!

    To tarp or tent?

Johnno, the bathtub groundsheet was actually made from an army surplus IPK kit. It cost me £5, which gets you a sheet of stiff very strong waterproof material, some cord and aluminium stakes. The material can be cut with scissors without having to seal or hem the edge, as it doesn't fray. I cut...

    Waterproofing a sewn in groundsheet

I tried Fabsil on mine once. Seemed to do the trick, at least for a bit! The IPK stuff is brilliant though, I made a bathtub groundsheet for use with the tarp out of it. A "footprint" made of that should be bombproof!

    To tarp or tent?

I think the Tarp v Tent question depends a lot on which tarp v which tent, and also on the type of terrain and weather. I have used different tents and different tarps, and to some extent it's horses for courses. The lightweight single person tents available at the lower price ranges do tend to...

    sass smock

I spoke to the Sales Director of Ventile not long ago, who said that the fabric comes treated with a flourocarbon type finish, to make the water bead up. This will presumably wear off over time, so the fabric will rely on its inherent properties (ie swelling fibres) to keep the rain out. The DWR...

    Wild camping west scotland

Knoydart is class. Went for a few days with a couple of mates at the end of April. Took the train to Glenfinnan, (where the Harry Potter train to Hogwarts goes over the viaduct!), climbed to 800m and pitched camp After a wild night I woke up on an island... The weather was poor, so...

Howabout Sir Flew in his own words? Enjoy! http://epsociety.org/library/articles.asp?pid=33

Sorry mate, this conveys a clear ignorance about Lewis! "In the Trinity Term of 1929 I gave in, and admitted that God was God, and knelt and prayed..." (age 31) In 1931 (age 33) Lewis recorded in Surprised by Joy: "When we [Warnie and Jack] set out [by motorcycle to the Whipsnade Zoo] I...

I think most people would agree with that. But that does not mean that religion and logic are incompatible. If you read C S Lewis you can see that he goes to great lengths to argue his (Christian) case from a logical standpoint. Whilst the rules on here discourage religious debate, I have read...

No, I mean Sir Antony Flew! Check out the link in my previous post, repeated here http://www.uncommondescent.com/intelligent-design/antony-flew-reviews-dawkins-the-god-delusion/ It seems he is a bit exasperated with Dawkins, to say the least!!

Nonsense! I have faith that my car will get me from A to B. That faith is based on my logic. I know how old the car is, and the service history, and the mileage, and have experienced how reliable it is. I have faith that when I get in an plane, it will get off the ground and land safely...
