I've been doing this sort of thing since I was a teenager, not by choice, because in those far off days, it wasn't called Bushcraft, it was called being too poor to buy proper kit. Nine years in the army improved my technique, and then I taught Cadets how to live in the wilds. I only use a tent when I take the family out, otherwise it's a tarp, it saves on campsite fees.
(With regards to the last sentence, delete the bit about a tarp, my new set-up is a tent/tarp arrangement based on an old photo of a prospectors camp from the Yukon gold rush. I need my creature comforts as I get older.)
