    ray mears knife

You're right. e-bay seems to create it's own vacuum of prices for items. I think that many of the people who use it don't even bother to look elsewhere for the same items. They buy and sell everything thru e-bay. I sold some old cufflinks I had on there, and they ended up going for more than...

    Fire pan?

I managed to get a small round portable steel BBQ from tesco for about £2 in the summer. Just took the grill bit off and use the tray on some bricks to stop the lawn/decking getting scorched. Doesn't hold that much wood, buty for a small fire it's OK. For bigger fires I use the steel...

    Chevalier "Arizona" Hat

I tend not use my hood when out walking etc because when I move my head, the hood stays put and obstructs my view. When just sitting there though, hood works fine.

    Chevalier "Arizona" Hat

I've got a nice wide brimmed Akubra Territory. The brim is about 4inches I think, when it arrived it seemed huge at first and I felt really self conscious in it, but you soon forget about it and get used to the sniggers and shouts of "g'day" from passers by :) Its rabbit fur felt, and...

    Chasing the Ember

I agree with Rich59, the notch needs to go right through to the floor, and then you need a scrap of bark or similar to placed underneath it, to catch the dust etc. Maybe try a different flatter piece of wood (i just split my willow branch down into two/three sections so they were nice and...

    Chasing the Ember

I had no joy at all until Fenlander showed me on a trip out one day. I use a hazel drill and a willow board. Before my instruction from Fenlander I was going at it way too fast, ended up tired out, grumpy, frustrated and sweating and unable to proceed any further. Make sure you position...

Bushcraft Bunny Helps with Tinder :-)

I found it a bit too coarse straight from the bag. Maybe keep a pile in a pocket and it will dry out plus the movement while you are walking about etc might buff it up a bit. The rabbit had helped by rubbing it all up and making it nice dry and fluffy which is why it took the ember so...

Bushcraft Bunny Helps with Tinder :-)

:D Yeah, when I re-read the post it looks like that's what I mean doesn' it. Just to confirm........it's the hay that makes great tinder. The balls, when covered with a fine sprinkling of caster sugar can be passed off as small bon bons. ;)

Bushcraft Bunny Helps with Tinder :-)

Just a quick tip, that you may have thought of already, but just in case :) I was practising my bow drill last weekend and needed some good tinder to put the ember into. The pet rabbit has eaten most of my long grass that I had used in the past, so I had none handy, except for the straw in...

    Finishing wood handles

My woodlander came from Ben Orford with a coating of Liberon Finishing Oil. I picked some up at the local DIY store. Can be used on spoons etc too as it's safe for eating utensils too. Leaves them a bit shiney (which I quite like and it brings the grain up beautifully), but very well protected.

    Directory of Knots- John Shaw

I found the above book, ring bound hard back, at a Garden centre on one of those Cheap Books displays that they often have at these places. It was £4.99, and its quite a nice reference for different types of knots ranging from the most commonly used and most useful, to some fancy decorative...

    near miss

I was once approached by the Police while eating fish and chips in my car with a mate. At the time we were both in the T.A. Had been away with them the day before, and both had the day off. They asked to check in the boot, and that's when I rememberd that my kit was still in there....complete...

    woodland to practice bushcraft in

Maybe don't menton fire at all until you have used the site a few times. Then the owner will be able to see how responsible you are and may be more inclined to consider allowing a fire. It would be a shame to not have use of a beautiful spot just because you can't light a fire, and at least...
