my way is tracing paper and an ordinary pencil can mark routes and way points on any map and fold inside easily just mark a crossing grid lines and mark the numbers to realign if nessesary i try to keep copys of routes walked and then on a rare empty day you can chose one and off you go

As said above if you have to use a failsafe then you are probebly past caring how you get warmth food and drink so light it anyway possible
but if you have time energy keep trying the hard way until you find the magic trick to make it work

well jacks are a great dog and will walk forever mine keeps up with me and the new collie pup the jack is 3 and the collie is 8 months nothing stops them short of a hike for the day have taken the jack up snowdon no problem and they fit in your sleeping bag to keep feet warm
I think this is definately a question of the embodied cost of an item and making people be responsible and think that answer is at the 'other end' of the problem.
If at purchase all non recyclable items (plastics, tvs, fridges etc) had an appropriate surcharge for dealing with em when the time...
