Your top 10 first items to get

Wherever I go, I'm never without a bottle of water a plastic sheet and cordage. That's even when I to to work - always on me.Getting the basics for camping in the woods derive from two points of view: Survival: This category is the basic requirements for safety. So, if in cooler conditions...

    Urban survival grill and cooler

Thank you for the laugh! On a technical note; the 's' bend must provide good air feed to the coals - ? A good rocket stove idea.I wouldn't find it easy to overcome the obvious psychological barrier there.. so sausages cooked on that might be for the less culinary squeamish among us.Love the idea...

    National Trust Pilot Scheme

I think this should be strongly resisted. All livelihoods are already subject to income tax. National Trust is a charity and as such, should not effectively make 'contributions', mandatory. The trust will need to have it's 'charity' status removed; this is a serious shift of 'ownership'! They...

    Coleman Camp Oven

Paid £70 ish for mine about 4 years ago. I'm not lucky at finding a bargain but I really wanted one so coughed up. It was in mint condition and I've had lots of fun with it. It's great how they fold flat.Don't know how to post photos - I have one or two of it.

    What glue for boot soles??

Tanners bond. Made for leatherwork. Sticks anything. I've used it to stick the heal part of my rubber soled snow boots. Last time I purchased it, it came in a tin. Once opened, it will gradually harden off so it might be an expensive purchase if used for a one-off repair. I'd search for the tin...

What did you see in the woods today?

Ramsons - thousands of them. Not flowering yet but pungent enough! There are Plenty of squirrel here and birds of all kind in good voice. Upon picking up a small chunk of punkwood, a woodlouse and a millipede made their escape. Just goes to show the number of creatures that rely on dead wood...

    Talk of reintroducing lynx

Others have already made points that I'd make but my feelings are quite strongly weighed against re-introduction and at first, it was hard to answer, 'why'. I think its because I don't like the idea of threatening a now established animal kingdom with a terrifying preditor. Our now native...

Free things that are really useful!

Thin polystyrene foam sheet that is usually wrapped around electrical goods. Makes a very lightweight, low bulk, insulated sit mat. I collect mine off packaging at work (from deliveries). It would otherwise end up in the bin.

    BUFFS - Good or.... ?

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they do the job and are very versitile. i'm just not the person for them. Some people wear bandanas as hats, the buff will convert easily to a hat. I don't wear my bandana on my head either. :)

    BUFFS - Good or.... ?

Personally, I don't like them. Several reasons; first, if I get too hot the only option is to remove it which usually means taking off my hat to do it. I prefer a hoodie to keep my head warm under a hat so the option of pulling a buff over my head is redundant. In fact, the balaclava is a better...

    Lightweight warm sleeping mat

I made one really 'gulp at the price' amazing investment just over a year ago. I like hammocking and already own a nice top quilt and underquilt but wanted something of quality for tent camping. I used to use a roll mat and sleeping bag but began to use my top quilt more and more - it helps to...

    What would you do?

I would immediately look for a medical tag or bracelet (some medical conditions require immediate administered medication if they suffer shock or trauma) its wise to make sure they are otherwise in good health! We need to know why he fell out of the tree! He might have passed out up there...

    Conflicting views about bushcraft

I've got along with an Opinel 6 for years thn bought my first Mora. Only now hav I bought what could be called a bushcraft knife (modest) - Mora Bushcraft Black. So all these years, pretty 'knifely-challenged', does neither deminish nor enhnce/highlight my skills/lack of skills. If somebody...
