Day Out Some winter fire lighting in my Medieval kit

Saturday I taught what in the UK would be considered a bushcraft class. My fire lighting kit took a beating and not much was left, even my char cloth was damp-ish. What a perfect time to see if it still works when it is really needed. I went out for a little woods walk today and put what was...

    Medieval'ish saw DIY

Stanley blades have double holes in the blades so they fit standard and non-standard saw frames. I used all 4 holes because things like pins get lost. In this case I could lose two of them and still have a usable saw. The old one is none, two is one philosophy.

    Medieval'ish saw DIY

I see the odd one at antique stores and flee markets. Antiques stores seem to think they have the lost ark from Raiders' and price out of this world and flee market guys just do not want to pack stuff up at the end of the day so you can get them for pennies. There is a type of saw vice you can...

    Medieval'ish saw DIY

Well at medieval events over here in eastern Canada I seem to be the firewood guy. Most medieval reenactors over here fall into some pretty tight categories. The geek and intellectual sort who use keyboards for a living and are not so great at manual labour. The army guys who just like to fight...

    Medieval Hike

The only time I have ever had problems is on inclines when there is wet grass, more so when a sole is newly replaced. That said; I do not think medieval people had to contend with mowed grass. Longer grass is not such a problem, and neither is farm grass grazed by animals (for whatever reason?)...

    Medieval Hike

Some of us outdoor enthusiasts from Canada who also happen to be medieval reenactors got together to do a little hike on the Bay of Fundy coast only we did it in medieval clothing and gear. Some of the newer members do not have their full kit yet and some of the older members opted for modern...

Some Medieval projects I have been working on

I have been pretty busy this winter with projects for reenactment stuff and just generally to stay sane. We have had 11-12 feet of snow this winter and the first 5 feet was fun, after that I just wanted it to end. First, reproduction of an ancient shoe with an important sounding name, my...

Axe mask without studs, buckles etc?

Cut a strap an inch wide 6 to12 inches long depending on your needs. Cut two parallel lines in the length of the strap at 1/3 and 2/3 across leaving about 3 inches long uncut. Discard the excess for another project. Soak the wide part in cold water for a minute and roll it up tight. Pinch a...

    Chisel protector

For chisel protector mark II just extend the leather bit and make a sheath. To many people don't bother to protect their edges.

    Spruce Beer

Or as I now call it SCHPRUUSSS BAER... I came across this mid 1700's Canadian Recipe for Spruce Beer and had to give it a brew up to see how it tasted. I tried this Scots Pine Beer from Scotland and did not really get on with it. That being my only experience I figured that my Spruce Beer...
