    Birth of an adder

Those are really beautiful photos. Here in the U.S., some rattlesnakes (which also give birth to live young) are known to practice rudimentary parental care. But the young are soon entirely on their own.

Zarges storage boxes - can you stand on them

You might be able to dent the lid if you stood right in the middle of a large one, but keep your feet on the edge and you'll have no problem. My wife and I have about a dozen Zarges cases. They are bloody expensive, but should last a lifetime. We love ours.

Real Beer, or Ale as it where...

I don't think anyone has mentioned Fullers 1845 yet - possibly the best bottled beer I've ever tasted from a major brewer. I second the Badger Golden Glory, too. Did anyone here ever try the (sadly defunct) Thomas Hardy's Ale? That was some amazing stuff.

Bow Making - Just how difficult is it?

Commander, Some years ago I made an English longbow from a yew stave I bought mail order, along with a couple of how-to books. I took my time, and the result met my hopes in every way. I've used it at longbow shoots at ranges up to 200 yards. If you're patient and not a complete klutz with...

    Mating Viv Lizards

Lucky sighting, Jonathan! For those of you who think this is kinky, JonathanD will know that in my neck of the woods we have entire species of whiptail lizards that are all female, and which reproduce themselves through parthenogenesis - essentially self-cloning. But two females will often...

    Pattern 58 bottles - differences?

I wanted to update the issue with the Web-tex bottle I received from Ronnie Sunshine's eBay store. He replied quickly and maintained that he had shipped the correct bottle, noting that he has another ad for the genuine Osprey bottle (true, I just didn't see that one at the time). However, he...

    Metal coffee filter?

Just to add another couple of possibilities: Here in the desert where water is precious, I found the need to rinse out the permanent metal filters outweighed the freedom from paper filters. Also, I didn't like the coffee silt that gets through even the best ones. The nice thing about a paper...

    Breitling Or Rolex

JonathanD, First the name, then snakes, now Rolexes? It's getting spooky. I have a 25-year-old Explorer II given to me by my wife, which has been everywhere from sea kayaking in the Arctic to canoeing the Zambezi. It most definitely does not get pampered, and it's never failed - or needed...

    Pattern 58 bottles - differences?

Dave, are you referring to your Osprey bottle or a Web-tex bottle? I filled my Osprey bottle and poured it into the Web-tex bottle, which overflowed quite convincingly. But I didn't actually check to see that the Osprey had taken exactly a litre. Totumpole: Good luck with that presentation . . .

    Some advice please

I say old bean, what's wrong with an American accent?

    Some advice please

I agree with the other herper Jonathan - buy the F1. You won't be sorry. You probably wouldn't be sorry buying the CS either, and I own a very early Master Tanto that's a fine piece of work. But lately CS seems to do more and more, er, derivatives of other's designs, plus truly naff items like...

    Pattern 58 bottles - differences?

The more I look at the two bottles, the more annoyed I am. To be fair, the material on the Web-tex bottle seems sturdy. But it's most assuredly not a one-litre bottle as the ad said, much less military issue. And as Sasquatch mentioned, the cap gasket looks to have been made from thin white...

    Pattern 58 bottles - differences?

An interesting thing happened in the middle of this thread. A couple of weeks before I posted, I ordered what appeared to be a genuine NATO Pattern 58 water bottle, here: NATO bottle It was advertised as 'current army issue,' and the size was given as one litre. Well, I just received it, and...

    Pattern 58 bottles - differences?

Okay, cheers everyone. I'll make sure I get the Osprey version. I'm considering shipping over a pallet of the things and going into business.
