    SIA Door Licence

I'm a big fan of Geoff, his books gave me the confidence to start my journey in martial arts 20 years ago, one of my sons now trains at the gym I got my black belt. His honesty and openness on both the physical and philosophical aspects of life that he struggled with helped give my life a nudge...

    Honey stove with spirit burner

Hi Bob, I find stoves like that work best and are very quick and easy in summer, but can be quite tricky in winter. You have to be quite picky with your fuel. Cheers mat

    Dating a old chest

Hi Tom, You've got yourself a nice coffer there, dating from the second half of the 17th century. I would say the split turnings are original to it. I deal in and restore 16th - 17th century furniture, if you want any advice on restoring it give me a shout. cheers mat

    new knife?

It's the skill of the user that determines whether the tool can do most things, as Vestlenning said there is no all round knife. Having said that a big knife can do all the jobs of a small knife and the jobs of a big knife, generally a small knife will always be limited. So I'd probably pick the...

Snugpak fail in the New Forest and knife talk

I'm sorry but I still don't buy the sleeping near naked makes you warmer, or not the explanations for it. If the air has warmed up between your clothes and the sleeping bag then how would the cold sneak in to the gap between your skin and your clothes? Also why aren't we told to strip naked...

    Climbing/descending gear advice

I have many times, and it is hard work, but that's why I said "in case you need it for getting back up." Rather than "climb the rope with a prusik, it's a right laugh!"

    Climbing/descending gear advice

Also remember that knots weaken the rope you're using, some I gather up to 40%! I'd also have some cord with you to make a prusik loop in case you need it for getting back up.

Hand Made Heavy Duty Camp knife.

A real shame if this doesn't go, it's a beautiful looking hard use knife, if only I had the funds. Great work mate!

    Axe, machete or billhook...

Hi Dark Horse Dave, the tomahawk I use is one I had Dave Budd (from this site) make me. The head is approx 360g and depending on the wood the shaft is around 140-150g. It's a cracking little workhorse! Paul Sanderson, yep, I have no problems carving with it, obviously a mora would be my first...

    Axe, machete or billhook...

I think tomahawks give the best performance to weight ratio, mine is just over 500g with a 20" handle and chops and splits everything I need for a camp fire. I've actually given up taking my folding saw as it never gets used now.
