    Ground Dwelling Advice

I picked up a pair of poles today, I went with the Forclaz 500, a lot more expensive than I was hoping but I took your advice and went for the softest hand hoops! With 43 miles and a total height gain matching Ben Nevis I can't afford to risk comfort... the cheapo ones had paracord hand loops...

    Cheap compass recommendations please.

What about the Silva Micro 28 for £6.80? It is very basic (no turning bevel etc.) but solid construction and the carabiner makes it useful for not losing! I've just bought one as a lightweight backup/easily accessible alternative to my main compass. I've not used it in the field yet as I've...

    Ground Dwelling Advice

I could probably find woodland for a hang in the evening, but the mileage is quite long I don't want to have to stop early or push on further than I have too, sleeping on the ground mean I have a lot more freedom. The pyramid tent does look good, I'll be practicing creating my own in the garden...

Hunka Bivvy bags - Any good?

From a water resistance POV they have a hydrostatic head rating of 10,000, which is fully waterproof. I'm in the market for a Hunka XL at the moment, so I can't comment on whether they are actually any good. The reviews etc have been pretty good though, one of the issues I have read about is...

    Ground Dwelling Advice

I think the poles are a given no matter the setup, so I'll try them out in the shop (thanks for the strap advice IC_Rafe!) Thanks for all the advice, it's been very helpful! So after some more thought and googling and based on the suggestions here, the two options I see are: 1. DD...

    Ground Dwelling Advice

I'm a bit concerned that if I went the bivvi route, I'd find it too hot or too restrictive. Also if I use a tarp with a bivvi, as some people have suggested, then the bivvi isn't providing anything the tarp isn't already doing apart from keeping me away from the ground (I appreciate there are...

    Ground Dwelling Advice

I won't be sleeping outside during the November trek, and I won't be carrying anywhere near the weight, thankfully! A lightweight tent or hooped bivvy would be nice but I'm not sure I can stretch a budget that far. I'll grab a couple of poles from Decathalon, they're pretty light and cheap and...

    Ground Dwelling Advice

Thanks for the reply :) Wouldn't I need a bivvy OR a ground sheet, no point in both is there? Although I'm not counting every gram, extra weight takes it toll over a large mileage. Also, if I went the bivvy route, could I get away with not being covered, and side-sleep if it does rain? (that may...

    Ground Dwelling Advice

Hi All, As a hammock sleeper, I'm after a bit of advice from those more experienced sleeping on the ground! On the 10/11th June I'm doing a ~43 mile training walk in preparation for an 86 mile walk that I'm doing in November this year. I'll be starting at Goring and Streatley and following the...

    Older nettle leaves

I'm about to gather some nettles for cordage, rather than waste the leaves I'd prefer to use them. I was going to eat the tops with dinner and dry the older leaves (with the stems for cordage) and use them to make tea. Any other ideas? I'm assuming the older leaves aren't good for eating...

BCB Firedragon gel tablets and stove

I've used them a couple of times now, it heats up 350ml water to a temp good for coffee on one gel tablet. Efficiency will obviously depend on many variables. Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
