    Bushcraft radio net

I've just googled the Larkspur range - interesting radios that were no doubt fairly cutting edge at the time. It does make you appreciate just how technology has advanced though and what Yaesu achieved with the FT-8x7s! Are you a member of VMARS / RSARS? If not the following may be of interest...

Aha, you're on; I was in when the clansman kit was still in use (though only just) - you can buy 320s on ebay for £300-400 if you're feeling nostalgic. The cadets would probably appreciate them too, though for amateur use they're a bit restricted - no LSB for the lower bands unless you do some...

Nice rig - congrats on the license! I'm up for a net at some point. I use the 817 as well - mostly for SOTA - have you got in to CW yet? For QRP, and especially with the foundation license it's well worth it. I'm back in the UK in a month - might catch you on the air then! Ioan 2W0NNN

Love them - superb photos, especially the second one :)

    Checked Luggage

similarly I've travelled airline with some odd stuff - knives, ice axes, fencing swords, they care not as long as they're checked. I'd only make sure that it doesn't look as though you're importing / exporting them; they may not take so kindly to that and could hit you with the duty

    Can of worms..

not strange... unique! ;) if you think about it we're all strange by 'normal' standards. There are plenty who don't, and never will, see the logic in sleeping in woods or mountains when you've got a perfectly good bed at home!

UK issue Goretex bivvys - a quick question

I'd trust them in terms of waterproofness (as long as there's no holes or anything) but like Shewie said a tarp or poncho's a good idea with a basic bivy like that - will keep you far more comfortable if ( / when) the rain starts since you won't have to worrying about twisting the bag around...

    Can of worms..

and re the trail comment... nothing against trail readers, I pick it up myself sometimes... but in my experience half the 'all the gear, no idea' types I've met on the hills have got their inspiration from it!

    Scotland....

congratulations, sounds a brilliant job and in a dream location too!

    Can of worms..

I didn't mean to criticise you either NR, and re. your night out, well I bet you won't make the roll mat mistake again ;) best way to learn! Anyone who actually tries these things rather than sit talking / thinking about them has some respect from me. Btw if I remember rightly I don't think that...

    Can of worms..

Hmm I can see the point novemberain was making but I don't agree with it. I get outdoors with the aim of getting away with the stresses of 'real life', so IMHO everyone should be able to enjoy the outdoors with as much or as little kit as they like, without criticism. Suggestions yes, criticism...

    Arctic Sheffield - pic heavy

You haven't by any chance been watching RM's Telemark film have you? I saw those pics and immediately thought of that and Norway... before reading your comment!

    Whos cut their finger?

arghhh this thread is making me cringe. So far (touch wood) I've only had small cuts and grazes bushcrafting. I learnt my lesson a few years ago - working about 40' up on a crusher in a quarry I was trying to cut some awkwardly attached rope, knife slipped (yep, it was blunt, a cheapy...

    Google Earth OS map overlay

not sure if this has been mentioned here already but if not you can download a google earth file on http://www.brock-family.org/gavin/google-earth/osmaps.html that gives you an OS 1:50k overlay of the UK. There's also more detailed info included than on the OS if you zoom in and refresh (right...
