The dentist thing could be a red herring.. hole through about the size of a pencil, so the pin Is about 3-4mm?
could it be for punching holes in paper, like a ticket punch?
the end of the spike looks like it has a notch like the pins in a paper punch - is it a tight fit in the hole it goes through?

I don't get the "food for free" popularity.. not much Id info, it's arranged by plant name so you need to know what you've got first, and it only gives one usage per plant :dunno:
