Glos scouts run a survival skills badge weekend every year, we also run a bushcraft course and an advanced survival course alongside it.

this year i had a couple of scouts who produced one of the tidiest coolest camps ever. (yes i have already spoken to the parents about putting their photos up on t'internet) so i thought i'd share a few piccys.

one view of the camp with the builders.

the kitchen table. note the head of the besom broom sticking up.

details of construction. note the bit of biodegradeable twine used to prevent the split migrating. so much less trouble than hunting high and low to find just the right forked branch, an elegantly simple solution.

the fire and, isn't that just the most perfect pot hanger stick you ever saw!

another view of the camp and the back of the reflector.

again, elegantly simple construction.

looking from this angle you can really see the difference between the cleanly swept floor in camp and the normal woodland floor. the green tshirt is hanging on the otherwise invisible clothes line.

Great looking camp. I love the idea of the split and bound branch as opposed to having to find a forked one..

this is a three day camp over the bank holiday weekend. i had sixteen scouts and one leader on the bushcraft course. we normally consider the survival skills badge as a pre-requisite to this course so the scouts are already ok with the natural shelters and the firelighting and such. on this one we look at more specialist knife work. some bigger tools and expedititon basecamp stuff. sanitation and water, different ways of cooking meals, different types of fires and fire management, some tracking, some more plant ID. it's not really an advanced course per se, more just filling in the blanks that you don't have time to do on the survival skills badge course. not having to take time to build shelters means you can get lots more done.

i should point out that the only tools used in building the camp above were the mora training knives and sisal.

cheers, and.

cool. plenty of food for thought there ;) I've just taken over the group from a couple of guys who didn't get out much (mostly played games indoors), so the kids haven't had the chance to do anything like that yet. Out of about 18 kids five are due to leave soon and teh rest are at the young end of the spectrum, so I'll be able to teach tehm all kinds of fun things from scratch :D

I can feel the power!

Looking good Andy
Those sort of kids are a pleasure to teach - it makes such a difference when they want to be there to learn.

You, and they, :You_Rock_

Whoever took the time to teach those kid should be proud of themselves, justifiably so in my view. Those couple 'o kids don't know how lucky they are. Three cheers all round for that camp. Wonderful.

Looks like a fun weekend.

How many different cutting tools were used in the making of this Blogg?

I am surprised you didn't teach a bench making workshop.

Great to see the young people learning and enjoying the great outdoors.

Absolutely brilliant! A credit to yourself and the other leaders and to themselves!

What a solid grounding and good forethought for future ventures!

They clearly take a pride in enjoying the outdoors and doing it in a responsible and elegant way!

Superb!
