Does anyone have any information about the area surrounding Trondheim airport (aside from it being next to Hell), such as public transport, terrain, forested areas and what types of trees, etc?

Hilly area, With mostly spruce cover.
Public transport is probably lacking.
But there is an Express bus to Trondheim (of course). Local routes to Hegra, Gjeving and Skatlval.
You could also take Train/bus to Meråker, or Train to Storlien (Sweden).
Local Train every hour to Steinkjer, as I recall.
Any way, you probably have to walk a bit to be in the "Wild".

I don't know the area around the airport but I would take the train to Strolien or Undersaker. And make a hike in the Jämtland mountains. I have been there between Christmas and new year and I can recommend it.

If you book the train in advance you get some great deals.
