I love the light that a well managed lantern produces. Much softer on the eye than electrickery.
I wanted a way of hanging it off the Bell tent pole that was portable and dis-mountable so I decided to pinch an idea from the world of old sailing ships.
A bit of old broom stick mounted, boom like, on a rotating pin at it's end, anchored to the spar through a hole in the tent pole.
Add to that a line secured with a hook at the top to some cod line loops I had fitted some time ago for hanging things from, and splice a loop through the boom and a hanging hook to produce something that works like a derrick.
Easy to pack up with the lantern but adding a nice bit of nautical flair.

Very much of the age for certain.
Good ones are not easy to come by now. I have to admit, as a photographer, they do appeal.

I reckon one could easily be converted to LED for safety, although it would be tempting to use the original lamp if it was present.
No LED. Millions and millions of years have tied us to the carbon flame of a campfire. Mesmerizing, too.
And many buildings burnt down because of magic lanterns in their day.
