Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend any sites/brands that specialise in outdoor gear for children.

I have an 8 month old, and whilst I'm not expecting to be kitting him out in vidda pros and a Swanndri smock anytime soon I want to get him some more suitable attire for the outdoors.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Dave

Neighbors with little kids, bigger than yours. Hand-me-downs. They grow like the weeds and the used things were the ones that worked.
I have twin grandsons, turning 4 in October. The shere volume of their clothing is enormous. Vancouver, BC probably gets more rain than you do.
They have rain pants & coats, little sou'wester fisheman's hats. They play outdoors in the rain. Gutter boats, that kind of thing.

Anyway, congrats to you and yours with the kid.

My pair used to go out in the all in one suits when they were little. Layers underneath then the zip up suit over the top. I think they were made by Keela. They lasted well because they were handed on to my niece and nephews after. Seemed to work here in "sunny" North Cornwall.
Cheers Tim

We got a ton of stuff from "Little Trekkers". Their own stuff is robust, think it's called Spotty Otter, and that is where we were introduced to Hestra gloves. Tiny mittens that were brilliant. That said, when Decathlon have stuff that fits it's great quality and value. Particularly their fleece lined welly boots. As said, they don't stay in it long but our kids were 2 years apart so we would get up to 4 years out of the stuff, so worth getting something good.
A set of down dungarees and waterproof overalls, Hestra mitts and they would stay out in cold wet snow essentially all day and enjoy it. Survived wet gritty muddy days pretty well as well.

My kids get mountain warehouse stuff. It seems to do thr job, I wouldnt pay full price though as the outlet here is always having 50% sales etc. And then if you buy an item they tend to give you a voucher of some sort for your next visit too.

I don't know of any sites for that age, but when he gets about 8 years old the venues that supply the Scouts will be a good start. At the age you mentioned it's mostly a matter of protecting him from the elements. This time of year that means (mostly) a light hat, sunscreen, and insect protection. A small collapsible umbrella might be a good thing to carry to protect him from both sun and unexpected showers? open it and sedt it up like a beach umbrella on rest stops to give shade without interfering with a cooling breeze?

Used to get spotty otter when mine were that young. Bomb proof kit! Both mine used it before it was passed on almost good as new despite plenty of use. Now they're a bit bigger we often use mountain warehouse as above it doesn't need to last more than a year but now they really do abuse it! To be honest the kit is pretty good especially boots and fleeces.

On a more serious note, many outdoor stores (usually small company's) do gear exchanges for kids. You take in outgrown boots etc and exchange it for a better size. Seen a few of them in my travels. Worth looking into that maybe?

Decathlon do a whole range of kids stuff, cheapas chips and good quality, their wicking base layers are as good as many big brands costing several times more.
