Stead Hall Wood

Our site is situated between Otley and Ikley in village of Burley-In-Wharfedale. There is a train station roughly 1.5m walk from site so ideal for people who will be traveling on train as well. Just turn left out of station down Station Road, go under bridge and follow road round onto Moor Ln until you see Colston Dr on right with the Stead Hall Wood sign on left on path (Pictured below).

  • This is non-profit making, once the farmer gets paid any further funds are used to improve facilities or donated to a charity chosen by the group.
  • This venue is offered for family wild camping/bushcraft activities only, and is not in any way offered as a course, although impromptu or planned demo's may happen!

Fees

Price is £5 pppn to be paid on arrival. (Under 18's FREE)
Please remember to pay on arrival or once you have setup as it's a hassle having to go round reminding people.

Facilities

  • Communal Area: We now have a designated communal area at bottom of woods with a parachute canopy. You're welcome to sit and use this any time you wish.
  • Toilets: Currently no semi-perm/perm toilet but we will be putting one in soon so it's a case of finding secluded area and making a deposit ;)
  • Running water: Running water is available from a tap on site as well as a tap in next field and also a stream running through site for people who would like to use that for boiling/filtering. So no need to bring water unless you prefer to use own.
  • Shower Blocks: Yeah get real :p

Guidelines

These are just some basic guidelines which will be updated from time to time. We don't want to be all Nazi so just use common sense ;)

Parents/Guardians:
  • You need to be aware of where your children are at all times.
  • Please keep an eye on your children in the communal area and not let them run around as we don't want any unnecessary accidents.
  • We encourage the safe use of sharps, please make sure all carving and like is supervised.
  • Please ensure that your children are in bed or at your camping area from 10.00pm – 8.00am and are not running around during these times.

Noise:
  • Please keep noise to a minimum between 10.00pm – 08.00am. Enjoy yourself but please have consideration for others.
  • Please do any processing of firewood outside of these times. ie No loud axing of wood at 5am waking everybody up.

Fires:
  • Due to limited fuel, Personal fires must be kept small, dont waste what we have!
  • Please do not chop up the dead trees to use for logs, as these will be used for the communal fire only there is still plenty of smaller dead wood lying around.
  • Please leave fire scars to a minimum. Before leaving make sure your fire area is cleaned away, ie sweeping/washing away ash etc to leave no trace as much as possible.

Car Parking:
  • Vehicles are to be initially parked up the narrow grassed area to the left hand side of the static caravan.
  • Once this is full start filling car park from left to right.
(will add pictures after next meet)

Rubbish:
  • There are no refuse facilities on site!
  • You bring it in, you take it away!!
  • There is never to be a communal rubbish bin!!!

£5pppn including under 18's?

I'd like to put myself down as "tentative" for the time being, if that's possible. Will depend on someone being kind enough to provide transport as I don't drive and I'm terrified of trains :(

Under 18's are free.

I don't drive either. I usually get train there and car back with friend. Not sure why you're scared of trains bud, You have a MUCH higher chance of crashing/dying in car. I'm sure there will be somebody who you could share transport with.

Good to know about the U18's in case one of the nippers wants to come. Will see if anyone else's are coming before i talk to her about it.

Yeah I'm aware cars are not the safest form of travel but I just can't force myself to get on a train. Weird as i grew up in Newcastle and used the Metro every day but I just can't do trains :(

If anyone is willing to car share, I'll chip in for fuel of course.

Don't like trains?

Go by bus, then!

X84. Leeds - Skipton service. About an hour.

Runs on Sunday, too, for your return journey.

http://www.wymetro.com/

Edit: that'll get you to Burley. Then it's an easy walk to the site.

Check out Metro's Weekender ticket, too. All your bus travel from 1800 Fri. to midnight Sun. for 8 quid.

PM sent with a few questions. I should be good but the extra information would help a shedload.

Having the bus as an option is nice, would still prefer a car though haha. Lugging a load of kit onto public transport would be a logistical nightmare.

It's as much of a nightmare as you make it. My thinking is that if you're carrying too much to make bus travel feasible, then you're carrying too much. If someone offers you a lift, it's a bonus.

This will be my first multiple overnighter, if not my first overnighter at all, depending on whether I get out before then. So I would rather be over prepared than under. I do agree with you but until I have the experience, understanding and connection with my kit, bringing more than required will definitely help me evaluate properly.

Indeed it would be. There's plenty of time left yet and if no offer arises then you have kindly given me alternative choices, which I'm thankful for. Without trying to sound like a cheapskate or freeloader though, I would much rather hold out for the offer til the last possible moment.

My first time too but I'm going to be at the opposite end of the scale and take the bare minimum. Sleeping kit, knife, 1 change of clothes, a water flask and cup and something to eat.

To be fair, I'm not taking much more than that for myself but if the nipper comes, i need to make sure she's got enough to be comfortable and not want to leave at 2am. Therein lies the issue. Where do i draw the line on what she can have? She's not gunna carry anything heavy, so trying to carry enough sleeping and shelter kit for 2, plus food and clothes takes up an awful lot of room. Hence me not really wanting to rely on public transport.
