For the last couple of months ive been struggling for work what im qualified for (satellite engineer) since the digital switchover, work has gone downhill because basically everyone has some sort of digital TV now. So ive been working with a carpenter for the last 8 months as an apprentice, if you like.

But a few days ago I had a call from an electrical company in Swansea asking me if I would like to go and work in Cambridgeshire for 8 weeks in a power station in Little Barford. I obviously said yes, the money is fantastic but she couldn't guarantee I had it until her boss approved my CV.

Today I had a call....got it!! EXTREMELY happy!!

So, I went to see the woman to take up some details. Not only does she want me for 8 weeks in this power plant, but to learn the skills about working in industrial electrics because she is short on boys for contracts in Suadi Arabia and North Carolina and she wants me there, providing I can gain the necessary skills whilst im in Cambridgeshire. She was a really nice woman, and these were her last words.

''Work hard for me James and ill stick you anywhere in the world''

I feel like today is the start of my career. Nothing could possibly make me feel unhappy today.

I guess thats my year in Canada on hold....for now.

WOW well done James, its opportunities like this that come along once in a life time. Grab it with both hands and you may never look back. After leaving the Army in 91 I got the chance to work in Berlin for a couple of years it was fantastic and opened up so many more doors. I bet you are well chuffed good luck I hope you get to see some of the world whilst being payed to do so.

Congratulations! And you'll like North Carolina if you go there. Mountains to the West, Outer Banks (and Kittyhawk for the aviation historian) to the East, rivers, lakes, sea, lots of beaches, great fishing and boating, and a fair bit of timber too:)

Well done mate , and at a time when things are looking bleak for lots of people it's good to hear of someone landing a good job .
Stick at it for a bit and get your feet firmly under the table and gain as much experience and qualifications as you can , Canada will not be going any where (even holidays can keep the dream alive )
Skilled electrical trades earn top dollar in Canada so it might open even more doors .

    Craig............
