I found a few pieces of resin, this makes excellent material in the early stage of the fire.

Next I will try to use it exclusively (no birch bark).

You are quite right, in this setting the resin actually did not add anything at all. I was just experimenting.

I learned that it burns brighter, longer and more concentrated (maybe even hotter?) than just the birch bark.

I guess in the rain or with a lot of wind that could make a big difference.

Ah cool, would defiantly be a good thing to try, have you had a play with lighting pine knots from a ferro rod, tiny shaving like a feather stick, they go really well!

Funnily enough I just rewatched Ray Mears Bushcraft in America yesterday night, where he explains about those!

Will have to go out looking. There's a small area with lots of pine nearby!

The idea to use them directly with small shavings sounds good, I wanna try that out!
