From M5 Exeter, take A30 and stay on it past Oakhampton, Liskeard, Bodmin, Newquay. Leave A30 at Kingsly Village signposted towards Fraddon, Grampound Road. Follow signs towards Granpound road and you will pick up the Footsteps Of Discovery Signs (look for yellow on Blue). From Exeter airport to the woods takes around 1 hour 40. Avoid the St Austell Lostwithiel route as ther are loads of road works at the moment. Further directions at: http://www.footstepsofdiscovery.co.uk/location/location.html

Woods open from 1200hrs unless you cant wait. I will be there from about 11.

See you at the RV

Thanks to Mr/Mrs Smarty and Spanner for a great meet up again, nice to see more people attending this year regardless of what the weather had in store for us, at least we all now know how good our sleeping bags are or not :)

Really enjoyed the blacksmith lesson and the opertunity to make something, I might have the knife all done by the next meet up !

Good night on Sat, all sat around eating stew and flat bread chatting which was great, and what being outdoors with others is all about.

Thanks again to the Footsteps Gang, see you all next year

Ps I will post/pass on the Pics of JonnyP and janiepopps to the footsteps website album

Cheers Basha

Hey all, thanks guys - another absolute cracker (even considering the hail, rain, snow....etc etc  )

Cheers Tristan & Amy - the tripod is awesome. Looking forward to cooking up many feasts to come on that! Will get a photo up later.

Basha "Ps I will post/pass on the Pics of JonnyP and janiepopps to the footsteps website album" ??? Should I be getting worried at this point...?

Cornwall...
Well that was another fantastic Cornwall meet at Smarty's...
Very cold and windy weekend with a fair bit of rain, but that didn't put us off having fun..
We had Tristans mobile forge and we all made ourselves bits and bobs. Most impressive was Dingo's daughters rams head coat hanger, I thought..Hope you have some photo's of that to put up Dingo. I made myself a knife blank out of an old file. Tristan was a great teacher, which was good cos it took me ages to do my knife...
Spanner did a talk and demo on trapping which I missed cos I was still hammering my bit of metal...
There was knot tying with Richard from the International Knot Tyers Guild (think thats right). Very nice man who I could sit and listen too for ages..
We had tomahawk throwing and knife throwing with Smarty and Spanner, and tracking awareness with Ben from Bushcraft School. Smarty did a talk on survival awareness in his new yurt and I did a plant bimble through and around the woods there, trying my hardest to find us some interesting plants at this time of the year...
Janie made us a superb communal stew which we had with Mrs Smarty's flat bread..Hope the pan is all ok now...
Oh, we drunk a fair bit too....
Will sort some photo's out somewhen...

Fab weekend, big thanks to Smarty and co and nice to meet new faces and catch up with old friends...

Happy Jonny....:approve:

Well firstly thank you to Smarty, Mrs Smarty and Spanner for holding the meet and organising it on their patch. It was one of the best meets that I've been to and it was held in a really lovely part of Cornwall.

Thanks to Janie and JonnyP for picking me up from the station and dropping me off at the station as well as the food that they supplied and prepared over the meet. JonnyP good plant walk even if there wasn't much out there (time of year mate).

It was very nice to meet Dingo (and Daughter), Jon H, Basha (as always), Richard, Tristan (a very talented man), Amy, Woody (and the dynamic trio), Nikki, Angie, The Searchers, Angie (from The Searchers), Ben, Mike, Kate, Cindy and Orla (the last three being the canines that I met). I hope to see you all again.

Smarty, If you are good enough to hold it again next year let me know and I'll be there.

Great meet Chris, many thanks a definite improvement on last years, a really nice assortment of things to do and see.

Bit gutted I couldn't stay longer but my wife is now feeling a bit better at least.

Finlay loved it as usual, skip filling is obviously his forte.

All being well I'll be there next year for sure.

Troops your'e too kind. Its a pleasure to let you all into the woods for a few days. Its nice to sit and talk to like minded types and exchange tall tales and other dits. Big thanks to all who braved the harsh cornish weather and those who were MIA hope you can make it next year. The planning starts now.

Well I may have only made it for the sunday, but was great to meet up with friendly faces again from last year Smarty, janiepopps, jonnyp, spanner and mr john h (shame you had to leave early but good luck for the next 3 months and the next 18years after!!) Was also lovely to meet new faces, mrs smarty, Leon, woody, tristan, amy, the searchers and mr knots himself.
the knot workshop sounded great, gutted to have missed out on jonnyp's food forage as jonny always comes up trumps, missed out on blacksmithing this time but hopefully next year, caught the tale end of smarty's survival talk which if last years water talk is anything to go by, missed out big time, but the best bit............. finding out i was right!! the badger is a mustelid (weasel family) and the otter IS the largest mustelid, (sea otter heavier and giant otter longer than a wolverine. wolverine largest land based mustelid). woohoo! I may not know how to build shelter, or make fire or anything else that will keep me alive but I do know my wildlife and I do know how to do the victory dance..... but I don't know when to quit whilst I'm ahead.....and the dance continues...:D
and yes i do write the longest post containing the least amount of interesting things.
see you all next year if not sooner. xx

We got back from cornwall friday night, while we were away we had a new set of stairs put in... our eldest son stayed at home and took the old set out and supposedly cleaned up! well with the mess that was created fitting the new set, combined with the fact that every door in the house must have been left open..... we cleaned solidly all day saturday, along with the washing!

So, today we have tidied the loose ends and made a roast dinner and sat reflecting on what has been the best holiday we have had in years, the RV was great, the weather could have been kinder but it didn't dampen the spirits or the drinking of them! i would like to say a big thank you to Smarty and co for putting the event on, and to everyone who attended for such a great experience.

Steve, thanks for being a great camp buddy, it was great to talk and try out the kit, have you heard from Stuart yet?:You_Rock_

Can't wait until next year, for all those who thought about it and never went for whatever reason, i would recommend you come next year, and for all those looking for a new meet with a good crowd, you would be hard pressed to beat this lot, if all the other meets and moots that are advertised on this site are as good, and i dont doubt for a minute there not, then we are a lucky bunch.

Good pics mate. I had a great time too. Though I was back at work sooner than you. The weather forecasts weren't great and Saturday was bloomin cold but I had a great time. Thanks for your company, thanks to smarty, spanner and all the rest. I look forward to next year.

As for Stuart M, I haven't heard anything. I guess hes a busy man with his new little one. I will drop him a line in a week or two. Take care Adam my old mate, if you ever feel the need for a night or two under the stars and you need a wing man just give me a shout!

We haven't stopped talking about how much of a good time we had, not only was it great at Smarty's, we had a great week at St Ives and the weather was fantastic, it only seemed to rain at night!, although it was cold in the wind, if you where wrapped up then you were fine and of course, the pubs are always a good place to shelter from the elements.......only after a brisk walk mind. Kate said she cant wait for next year and Ruby said it was the best EVER, oh and will Janie be doing the egg hunt next year?.... I said i should think so, and that sealed it really.

So we will see you all there then.

Grandad thinks its the 'dogs wobblies'
