I trimmed the buddleia bush a good while back and left the sticks to season. Now I don't know if they make good sticks or not but I have giving it ago. There is no info on the net about people making sticks out of it but it seems solid enough though I have not tried it out yet.

Imagine that your sense of balance is screwed up. Imagine you feel like you are tipping over, frontwards.
Imagine that you need the cane, not so much to lean on, but as a prop to steady on. That's me.

I'd lean on that one, not too hard, and watch for flex in the stem. If it's good and dry, I'll bet it's quite stiff.
My cane is diamond willow and has a really broad hand piece which is nice to lean on = spreads the load = soft.
Do it up, I'd like to see it.

That looks like a good stick to me, I like the bend at the upper part and the handle, too.

I've made sticks from many weird and wonderful trees and shrubs and I've had very few failures; I can't see any reason why that shouldn't work out fine.

Have a look back, I made a buddleia stick a while back and use it in the woods every day they make an excellent stick which I use for beating brambles, leavering logs and other general woodland maintenance tasks as well as supporting my worn out knees.
Hopefully yours will be mature enough so the core is solid. I left mine to season for 2-3 years.
Strip off the loose bark then oil it, the bark that is bonded to the wood gives a lovely finish.#
It's not as light as seasoned hazel but from what I have experienced it's much stronger.

Hope yours serves you as well as mine.

I remember reading your thread now I can't believe i had forgotten about it.

Update: instead of starting a new thread here is a hazel and spalted oak thumb stick I've just finished I've also altered the bud stick

Looks good. This reminds me I put away a few various lengths and thicknesses of hazel a year or two back to dry out. Must have a go at a stick this year
