Yesterday I was out in a small preserve called Marielund, which is
the smallest and oldest one in this county, in Sweden.
It was established in 1945 and already back then the woods had
been left alone for more than 200 years, so this might be how
the woods looked some time ago.
Dead and dying trees are all over, and there's so many of them it
acctually makes it quite hard to walk about the place.
The ground is completely covered by a thick layer of moss, so every
step you take sink down into the ground, which is completely dry.
It is a marvelous feeling and you want to put up your tent in every
single suitable spot, but of course you should'nt in a reserve.
(But I've heard it sometimes happens...)
Eventhough this was in the begining of April and there were some snow
in places, the woods seemed very dense and compact, almost like a
rainforest. And the living trees had grown to massive proportions.
I stood here listening for about five minutes and it was absolutely
dead quiet. Eventually I could hear a bird singing far away.
An amazing experience.
This stream marks the eastern border of the reserve, which is to the right,
as I'm facing south.
The water is probably drinkable...
