    Quail prep

Well they are in a big chicken run, but there’s not been chickens in it for years so it’s completely overgrown.

    Quail prep

Good to hear from you Tony! I’m looking forward to being there. Can birds be plucked ok if I freeze them first? I have got hold of seven male quail, all unfortunately a bit bald, though they are now currently in a big grassy wild garden, complete with a nettle patch, living their best life...

Thanks yes, I’m done for the core days. I can buy more then eight but it’s not the cheapest place I’ve come across (just happens to be nearest) so I didn’t want to spend more than £40-£50

    Quail prep

Would anybody be interested in a short talk on keeping quails and a field prep? I can bring about eight (pre culled) birds, but they’d need to be £5.00 a bird as that’s what it’s going to cost me to buy them. I don’t have enough of my own so I’m having to buy them in. They are very simple to...

I stretched 12 hatched cocoons over a metal frame, it should be square really would have been easier. These are turning out quite small due to the cocoons being hatched and also I had a lot of very small cocoons. Still , I should get a result if some kind. It's all a learning curve. I have...

    Silkworm raising and Silk production

Well, little update on the worms , I tried , not very successfully, to reel some silk off some cocoons that died (they stink trust me) I placed the living cocoons neatly on paper towels, here's my whole collection, plus 'the last worm!' I've called him George. Doesn't seem to wanting to spin...

Thanks toddy, I'll have a look on YouTube. I've pulled a few more out, about 50, and there's about 20 more , I've got surprisingly few cocoons considering how many silkworms I started off. Maybe I let them get too humid, I had to remove the dead ones into a carrier bag

Cheers Jon :) its been a fun project, despite it being more work than I initially expected. Ive grown quite fond of my worms! When they hatch by the way, They mate and die within a day. they cannot fly either, having become so domesticated as to grow fat bodies and small wings. Once the eggs...
