What's your favourite trick, cheat or adaptation?

Vaseline soaked cotton balls (wool) works great but replace the Vaseline with Neosporin, Bacatracin, or another antibiotic ointment and it serves two purposes. Forest

    Non Hairy Deerskins

Search for "Buckskin" as opposed to "Deerskin" and I believe you will have more luck. Deerskin usually refers to tanned, hair on; Buckskin to tanned, hair off. (at least here in the US, YMMV) Forest

    Thistles- The drugs do work?

We have a clump of globe thistle that grows by our church. When in bloom the bees get so intent at feeding on the nectar that they are blissfully unaware of anything else. They sleep overnight on the underside and feed again as soon as the sun comes up. The children at church love to pet the...

    Unbreakable shaving mirror

In most auto parts store they sell sheets of reflective plastic stuff for repairing broken sideview mirrors. Easily cut or punched and can be made to any size/shape you want. Inexpensive too. Forest

    Tallow?

Tallow is extremely easy to render. I buy large lumps of beef fat (suet) from the butcher - it is usually intended for use as bird food and quite cheap. Run it through a meat grinder or chop fine, then put in a Crock Pot slow cooker for a few hours on low until it melts. Skim off any solids...

    Socks?!

Make them from the sleeves of a shrunken (felted) wool sweater. Wear standard men's knee black dress socks if they seem itchy. FWIW Forest

    Teaching yourself axecraft?

I have seen some teach axe skills by having the participants swing from a kneeling position to begin with - prevents the edge coming within range of legs, etc. That's how my boys started - just a suggestion. Forest By the way - the shorter the handle the more dangerous the axe. Start off...

    US members

There is no equivalent site in the US that I am aware of. That is why I am here. Although I do not contribute much, I have learned a lot in the year or so I have been lurking. I would love it if a similar site were available in States, but so far all I have been able to find are "survival"...

    DIY Bushcrafting gear book

Could the file be sent (e-mailed?? after a paypal transfer??) to those of us on the other side of the pond? Or perhaps a pdf or file download? Don't know what shipping for a CD or book would be, but I was under the impression that sending things between England and the US was rather expensive...

    a bullroarer

Someone suggested that bullroarers weren't very useful. I have heard several anecdotes of their use to scare off bull Moose and Grizzlies. Supposedly they are both terrified of the sound - pretty useful if you ask me! Forest

    Bread Boards or Wall Plaques?

I could sell those over here in the States as 'crop circle templates left behind by the aliens.' :D Please don't be offended - they are truly beautiful - it's just I immediately thought of crop circles upon seeing them.:)

    Fitted bandannas/'doo rags'

I had always believed the do-rag got its name from the fact that it was worn by bikers etc. to protect the hair-do. Not arguing - just seems a little bit simpler than the more arcane Drive on Rag. Curious as to your source. As for me, I have no source :D

    That Aussie flint & steel

For my tindertube I use a piece of cotton lamp wick as is used in old kerosene (Aladdin) lamps. In use you simply push out some wick, flatten it and hold on the flint as you would charcloth. I find the longer flat end of the wick is much easier to spark into than a cord and works without any...

    my pemmican is not nice!

Sounds like you made the same mistake I did the first time and put in way too much tallow (suet). You want just enough to stick the mixture together. Half and half is far too much. I kept putting in more to get it to stick forgetting that it was cooling as I added it. The better way is to...

    Chaga Tea

I collect chaga for tinder. Those parts that are not good for tinder, my wife grinds up for tea. It tastes VERY good. Not at all what you might expect. I find it sweet enough with no sugar added, my wife adds some sweetener - good with honey. We make it like Russian tea - steep double...
