    Kestrel Trousers

More trouser questions! Has anybody tried out Country Innovation's Kestrel trousers. They seem a possibility but I am curious about the "Innovation XL Lining". What is that and how does it feel on the skin? Anybody know?

    Gwynedd bender build

I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in helping to build a shelter at a little spot I have the use of up in the hills near Porthmadog. It's part using practical skills and part a chance to play in the woods, camp out , sit around a fire and shoot the breeze. I'm thinking of the weekend...

    marcasite and iron pyrites nodules

Anyone know where I can get marcasite and iron pyrites nodules? There is plenty of 'fools's gold' in the slate mines around here but thats's all the pretty sedimentary stuff,no nodules. And as for marcasite, i can only source little ones, 2 - 3 cm, which I reckon is too small. Thanks, Richard

    cracking striker

Just had a striker from Darrel Aune arrive through the post and I must say it's a beauty - feels lovely in the hand and puts out a shower of sparks with just a glancing blow at the flint. A real treasure. I think I've seen that you're a member of these forums Darrel, so thanks: :You_Rock_...

    building a nest

Just a bit curious about what people use for tinder nests when out and about with a bowdrill. I tend to have a bit of jute string about my person in case there's now suitable grasses. How about you?

    cramp balls and birch bark

I've been out playing with cramp balls this morning and have seemingly hit an impasse... I can get all kinds of tinder to work with cramp balls: punk wood, grass, jute string, cedar bark etc, but the one that is flooring me is birch bark. No matter what I've tried I can't get it to flame. It...

    How big's your basha?

I've had a 1.8 x 3m tarp (a Kathmadu) for quite a while now and have been pretty happy with it but have been thinking of getting something a tad bigger. I am curious about what size(s) the rest of you guys use, and why?

    mussel question

I've been out mussel hunting today (I know it's the tail end of the season but ...) and have come up wih a puzzle. I live by a tidal estuary quite well known for its mussels and yet I can find only small, barnacle encrusted ones. The seagulls, on the other hand, find big beautiful one with clean...

    hazel hearth question

I've had great success with hazel hearths in the past but I went out today to collect some new material and came up with a new phenomenon - when I cleave the hazel I've collected it all has a sunwise twist to it! I tried it with a hatchet, a billhook and a knife just in case it was the tool nut...

any ideas for 8 - 10 year olds?

I'm off for a bunkhouse with my Cub Pack this weekend to do a Captain Caveman sleepover . I've got bunch of things to do, such as building a couple of benders with some hazel and tarps; collecting tinder and kindling and messing with firesteels and making a hot drink; a bit of tracking and...
