This is a swan neck gouge I just made…first try, so no doubt there are some improvements that can be made, but it worked quite well on the first trial run with some dry desert willow….
I enjoy picking up bits of steel along the side of the road to use for future projects. I recently found an old broken handle from a pair of pliers and decided to forge a carving knife....Carved a spoon with it and discovered my new favorite knife....
Made these knives for chip carving and detail work. When I make knives, I always save any scraps or cutoff bits. This is what they're good for. Handles (mostly cherry) are knife finished with some paint.
I tried another mocotaugan. I wanted one with only a slightly curved blade. I also wanted to try a different handle configuration. I like how this one feels, better than the first one. For the tang I carved a slotted bed for it and then sealed it in with epoxy before giving it a wrap. The blade...
Occasionally I like to stop along the highway and see what goodies have flown off passing vehicles. Recently I found two large ball bearing sets. Immediately I'm seeing knives. I cut off the outer races, obvious blade material. But when I saw the balls, I thought, why not try them. I decided to...
Here are some black walnut spoons I carved recently. I discovered that this wood grows on a mountain not too far from where I live. I found a tree cut down by the forest service officials and thrown off to the side. It had been there for years, and the bark was mostly rotted off, but the wood...
I live in an extremely arid desert climate and it's murder on tools with eyes (hammers, axes, etc.). I've been dreaming of making a eye-free axe, and this is what I came up with. I used an old plow disc for the steel. The handle is ash. I've been using it and am extremely pleased. Overall weight...
Carved this one from a piece of desert willow. It was a piece of dried branch lying on the shore of the lake where I like to go fishing with the boys. Nice consistency and pleasantly colorful.
This first one is from regular olive wood. Hard stuff, and dense, but sure makes a durable spoon. My daughter has been using one I made for her out of olive wood and it's a real workhorse. Looks nice as it wears too.
I have a friend in Idaho who sent me some pieces of this wood he calls...
My wife was out on an errand and came upon some tree surgeons cutting down ash trees. She stopped and asked for some of the wood, which they generously loaded into the minivan. I've used other ash wood, but it's never been yellow like this. I went back and looked at the trees and they were...
I enjoyed making the last knife so much I had to start another one....And it's winter which is a perfect time to fire up the forge. I'm going to experiment with some design elements. Like a good womble, I chose a rusty old piece of file for the steel. Ground off the teeth and split it in two for...
