    Camping comfort

We've been using some (cheap) High Gear chairs which have a very short back and are damned uncomfortable for long seated sessions. One of our chairs broke on our last trip, so we are looking to get something new. Can anyone recommend a nice, comfortable chair for camp site camping? I would...

Greenfields Forest Camp Site, West Dorset

We went camping at the weekend at a place called Greenfields Forest Camp Site, in Sherborne, Dorset. The site's home page can be found here. We had planned to camp here in the past but never got round to it so we thought we'd finally give it a twirl. It's a fairly small site, limited to 10...

    Container for Trangia burner

So, the plastic bag provided with my Trangia for the burner is wearing thin and has holes in it. I'm looking for a pot to keep it in which, ideally, will fit inside the Trangia 25 (or GSI Halulite) kettle. What I would like is a small, screw top stainless steel pot. Anyone got any ideas...

Friction Fire - First Attempt (picture heavy)

I had a go at making friction fire today. I found a dead beech branch, still attached to the tree. I sawed off a piece to make the hearth board. I then split this down, to flatten each side. A gave the hearth board a bit of a tidy up using my neck knife. I made a socket...

MCQBushcraft - Introduction to Bushcraft series

Looks like Mike is doing a ground up introduction to bushcraft. I like his stuff, so will be watching. There will be an episode released every Saturday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nl5yJKyKFqU

    Oswald Bailey Closing Down Sale

Oswald Bailey are a cheaper end outdoor chain store, which I think is limited to a few shops in the south (Dorset, anyways). The store in Christchurch is closing down and is clearing out all its stock. Apparently, Millets will be taking over (they were already using Millets bags). The sale is...

    Trangia 25 Kettle replacement

Can anyone recommend a stainless steel replace for the Trangia 25 kettle? It needs to fit inside the Trangia 25 cookset. I've searched the web and can;t find anything. A scouting site claims to sell one but the picture looks like the aluminium one to me. Thanks for any suggestions.

    SIte very slow?

The site seems to be running very slow for me tonight. Anyone else experiencing this? Is there some maintenance going on or something?

    Brew up thread

Let's see the kit you used to make a brew today. I'll get things started. Here's what I used to boil water for cup-a-soups for the family at Hengistbury Head today. Honey Stove with a Trangia Meths Burner and Kettle. It definitely took longer than using the Trangia base and...

DIY neck lanyard for knife (Izula II)

Does anyone have any tips for making a neck lanyard? I'd prefer something that isn't going to strangle me, if some mishap occurs. I've looked at various options on google but none really appeal to me. Soo, what do you use? Any advice/recommendations gratefully received.

A walk in the New Forest

I thought it might be nice to document one of our walks in the New Forest. We got off to an early start, leaving the house at 06:00. We arrived at the Tall Trees car park (SU267047) at 06:20, just before sun rise. This car park is usually choc-a-block with visitors but, at this time in the...

    ViewRanger

We've been using this app for a while now. It's really useful for recording (and sharing) your walks and for navigation too. I find the maps to be excellent (in the New Forest). Anyone else use this? I think it's worth a look. It's free (with limitations). You have to pay to get the full...

    Unable to view photos

When I click a photo to see a larger view, a picture viewer opens and the rest of the page goes grey. I get a wait cursor but the picture never loads. How can I fix this?

What did you see in the woods today?

One of the main reasons my family and I go out into the woods is to see wildlife. So, I thought it might be nice to start a thread for folk to record the sightings they make. During a 5 hour walk around the New Forest today we saw a King Fisher, several Elvers and a Bee Fly. We saw other...

    Camouflage gear for the kids

In a previous post (started by someone else) I've bemoaned the lack of opportunities in the New Forest to do simple things like put up a tarp and light a small fire to heat some water or maybe cook some food. Well, I may have found somewhere :). I left the family in this secret place and...

    Daddy's Chilli Sauce

I'm a bit of a chilli fiend. I make up this recipe to have with just about every meal. It takes about 3 minutes to cook. * Take a small saucepan and add sunflower oil to a depth of about 2mm. * Pour in dried chilli flakes while stirring the oil until they are covered. There shouldn't...
