    A-frame improvised back pack

See http://www.primitiveways.com/pack_frame.html for a bit more about this very useful pack.

    Why?

Without denying that there may be times a 9 inch blade would be useful (though no situations come to mind) may I suggest that the difference between you and some of those who recommend giganti-knives is that you aren't searching for an excuse to carry a big knife. There's similar 'reasoning'...

    Article in todays Scotsman newspaper

Governments like the idea of banning things because it costs them very little to do so, is relatively straightforward and they can be seen to be proactive on crime which makes them popular with (potential) voters. It's also harder for opposition parties to argue against you without seeming soft...

minimum weight carried for a 4 day trip

Forgot to ask, what sort of rucksack have you got and how much does it weigh? Is the weight of the rucksack included in the 20/25 kg total?

minimum weight carried for a 4 day trip

My immediate suggestions for what to leave at home, presuming the kit list is for lowland UK at this time of year: hammock - sleep on the ground eating knife and fork - you've got a knife and there's nothing you can't eat with a spoon if you cut it up small enough (or use your fingers) map...

    Free Cramp ball!

I've been asked to pass on the info that the fungus weevil Platyrhinus resinosus relies on cramp balls for its life cycle so it might a nice eco-friendly thing to only collect a minimum of cramp balls and not denude one dead tree/area. Not intending to point fingers, just passing on some info. :)

Lone females in woodland - dangerous?

Earth Mother I forgot to say my friend (see above post) who's a keen bushcrafter (and a much more capable one than me) lives in West Kent and is willing to make himself available for the occasional jaunt. PM me if you're interested and I'll pass it onto him. He's also big and can look scarey...

Lone females in woodland - dangerous?

I was discussing this issue with a friend who used to work at a school for 'very naughty' kids. He regularly took them out on overnight camping trips. One 16 year old was a right little **** (I'll call him Sam); really full of himself and with a long offending history including street robbery at...

    vegetarianism and bushcraft

Interestingly enough some recent studies of modern hunter-gatherer diets have put their consumption of animal-based foods as 59 - 84% of their total calorific intake. You pays your money and you makes your choice.

    vegetarianism and bushcraft

Archiet I wasn't getting at you and I'm sorry if I gave that impression. The paleo-diet theorists have some interesting dietary advice; it's the basis for their theory I have problems with. Early humans at different times and in different places ate different things depending on what was...

    vegetarianism and bushcraft

Archiet - this isn't aimed at you. I'm aware you're just passing on information. These statements really get my goat. Which hunter-gatherers only eat 10% meat and when in history? I can't see how the particular group of our ancestors who hunted mammoth in the Pleistocene tundra managed to...

    Berghaus boots.

If you've had the goods such a short period of time that the shop is responsible for replacing the boots my advice is to go along to the shop during their busiest time and complain. If the staff try and fob you off then be polite and do not swear but be very firm, very indignant and increasingly...
