    What are these plants?

Yes we do use mixed birdseed, but the only things in it are the average. Millet, sunflower seed harts, serials, crushed peanut and something called panicum ,witch from a google search looks like some kind of tall grass or bamboo.

    What are these plants?

Ok this is not bushcrafty but I found a odd looking plant growing under one of our bird feeders a few months ago and thought it looked interesting. I thought I'd let it grow on a bit to see if it could be identified. Anyway now it started to flower, and we are none the wiser. The strange...

    Black Belt in Bushcraft

I've heard that school of Martial Arts referred to as Bull-shido ;) . My MA teacher always said that a black belt simply meant that you had learnt all the techniques, it's only then you start learning how to fight. As has been said though bushcraft is way too big a subject to have any kind...

    Plant Locations

Plant Locations I posted a link to this in the "There's an app. for that" thread after just finding it today. Well i've been having a fiddle with it and I think that it deserves it's own thread. Its basically a database of plants and trees people have found, but with each one linked to a...

    There's an app. for that

I only have second hand experience of iphones, my friend has one, but I would totally agree with the warnings about the compass. On a recent trip to Edinburgh his iphone led us on some merry trips to undesired, and undesirable, locations thanks to the dodgy compass. We eventually agreed that it...

    Macho?

I like that story. I remember seeing some documentary or something a while ago. As part of it a bunch of big fit young men had to trek in to the jungle, in Southeast Asia somewhere. After a bit one of them was really struggling and one of there porters, a little old lady, offered to take his...

Homebrewers / Winemakers - a few questions about elderberry wine.

Very interesting thread. I would just like to add that my Mum makes the most amazing elderberry and runner-bean wine. If i remember rightly the beans help neutralize some of the tannins in the elderberry or something. Anyway it makes a very smooth rounded wine, eminently drinkable :beerchug:

    going barefoot

This is a really fascinating thread! I've been walking barefoot on and off for as long as I can remember, in the summer at least. On our annual family camping holidays in Wales I almost never wore shoes. Me and a friend would compete to see who could walk the furthest along the gravel roads...

What would you teach a newby in their first weekend in the woods?

Another vote for this. If you try to "teach" them too much it mite brake the atmosphere a bit. As tobes01 said show them how to be warm and comfy. Do bushcraft stuff in the process and if the are interested show them how, but don't put too much pressure on. Above all make it relaxed and fun.

    Some Basketry

This is really grate stuff, I've always fancied having a go at basketry but there just isn't enough suitable willow or hazel around here. There is no end of brambles though! Now where did I leave those gardening gloves

What is the best bushcrafting dog?

I've never actually been wildcamping so I have no experience of my dog with that but I reckon he would be a grate companion. Don't know what breed(s) he is but he has a tough course coat that seems to shrug off every kind of dirt and water like teflon. When out on walks he will...

How to make a really loud whistle out of wood?

My Granddad used to make these, they can be very loud. The only problem is they don't last very long. After a while the bark starts to crack and it stops working. They are fun to make though and probably the easiest way to make a whistle in the woods.

    Too, too warm

I have been planting summer bedding plants at my grandparents the last few days. I went over yesterday afternoon but just 3 minutes in a totally open south facing garden against a massive south facing brick wall on a sun baked lorn with absolutely no wind was no joke :yuck: . Mad dogs and...

I do manage it most of the time but sometimes i just get sucked in :o And to nudge things back on topic a little. Here's a nice video explaining why this hole Ida thing has been blown way out of proportion by media and glory seeking scientists.

I reckon that a very good idea, for my own mental health as much as anything.

    simply incredible....

As said by SimonM these birds were reared in captivity and were known to have never used tools before. The interesting thing about this is that Rooks in the wild have never been seen to use tools and yet when put in a situation that required a tool they new how to make and use them without any...

    Missing link

You do seem to be a very thoughtful and intelligent person and I'm happy to let this drop and go do something useful :) but I'm sorry I just have to comment on this. "I simply don't agree that changes over time equals evolution" I'm afraid that's pretty much the definition of evolution. If a...

    My first selfbow

Thats a very fine looking bow so far :You_Rock_ . I would agree with you that it need some more off the ends, also I would say it looks like its bending a little to much just on the junction of the limbs and the handle. I'm by no means an expert and I'm shore some of the experts on here will be...
