There are a whole bunch of this generic bunch of this model on both eBay and Ali Express. I bought one in October which arrived branded as 'Aukmont' which I have used on two occasions.

Yep, the build quality isn't amazing. I was told that a couple of years ago the suppliers switched production from a factory in Zimbabwe to one in South Africa as a result of the financial situation. I suspect that quality may have dipped as a result.

Endicotts usually have them in stock and the one they supplied to me was in really good nick - it looked like unissued - and the service was top class. Well worth the £2 or £3 extra over some other suppliers.
The best advice has already been given above...backup the drive (or the pics/data you really need) onto another HDD, CD/DVD, or USB stick a.s.a.p if you can. This is probably a case of either the drive failing or the motherboard on it's way out.
Check connections first.

Not sure about the Ikea candles, but I know that Price's Household Candles (which are available in some supermarkets) fit perfectly width-wise although you still need to cut an inch or so from the bottom.
