    - 35 sleeping bag advice

For temperatures of -35°C it's smart to use two down sleeping bags. Your summer bag (comfort 3°C) inside your winter bag (comfort -20°C), or the other way around, given that the outer bag is big enough. This way you have more options and can use the equipment throughout the year. At those...

13th century wooden houses in Sweden

Maybe the wood was from trees which were damaged while they were still standing, so that the wood was full of resin. This is what I was told when visiting similar wooden houses built in that period in Sweden, maybe from the 14th century. It seems to me a very ecological way of making the wood...

One year life in a tent?

Hi, nice plans! I've lived on a campsite in a caravan for a year with my partner. We did the same in a tipi and a wooden wagon in Sweden. Living in the tipi was a great experience. I think it should be no problem living in just one space, as long as you are really close. A tent can be...

Laptop suitable for f/t Bushcraft Traveller... any thoughts?

I've also had the same challenge when living in a caravan, a tipi, a wagon and while travelling. Some years back I was choosing between a usb key and a portable harddrive and went for the harddrive because it's a lot cheaper per gb. I got one of the bigger capacities at the time and still...

    Sweden in December

Pay a visit to Trondheim in Norway as well, it's a beautiful city just 163km from Åre. It's easy to travel there by train (direct). I spent some days in Trondheim a couple of years ago, spending the night in a hilleberg tent on the hill with a splendid view over the city. We also just came from...

living outside for a year in a permanent camp what would you take

Just put an inner tent in it which goes up over two metres high so it covers all of the sleeping area and more. The only thing getting wet this way is the fireplace and a small area around it, and that dries up quickly ;) As Tadpole mentions dampness is indeed the biggest problem, definately...

living outside for a year in a permanent camp what would you take

That looks great Winstoo! Here's the inside of the tipi to show just another alternative: Floor made of 6 inch wood shavings covered with boughs and then some carpets to lie on next to the fire. PS: That's the sleeping platform for visitors, normally used as a bench, this does not show the...

living outside for a year in a permanent camp what would you take

Lived a year in a Sioux tipi in the Swedish wilderness and would happily do it again. The tipi was beautiful to live in and the evenings lying by the campfire were just splendid :campfire:. Sleeping on a bag filled with hay with reindeer skins on top and a Nanok Endurance -10 plus some woolen...

Gränsfors Bruks in Belgium and in Sweden?

I'll give an example of when I use which axe: I take the small forest axe for camping in swedish winter(-10 to -30C) with open fires, the weight is no problem on the back. I prefer to take a bigger axe and save weight by taking no saw (and ofcourse light sleeping bag, mat, tarp, food..)...

Fjallraven Greenland jacket (L, dark olive)

OK, I'll PM in the future, but at least you got a free up ;) Kind of you to mention the Telemark Dougster but I don't like the looks of it, though it seems a very good jacket as well.

    A Sleeping Bag Temperature Question

You can take a nalgene 1L bottle and a thermos with you, it's probably already on the kit list. Then in the night you can fill up the nalgene with hot water and put it in your sleeping bag with you (cover with socks or anything as it's hot) if it's too cold. Usually it gets colder in the morning...

    reindeer skin as sleeping mat?

Reindeer skins are very warm but there's no padding. So if you mean by comfort that you need more padding then you won't find what you are looking for in a reindeer skin. Otherwise cut them up like forestwalker mentions to make them smaller and lighter.

    Bivi bag question

You can also buy a sleeping bag which has a dryloft shell or gore windstopper. These are water repellent and breathable. Not as waterproof as a goretex bivy, but I assume you wouldn't be using the bag without a tarp or tent. The dryloft or gws sleeping bag ways less then a sleeping bag + bivy...
