    Wayland's Ditty Bag

My current ditty back is a crude modification of an old trouser leg. It does the job, but I have never come up with a design for a replacement. Your bag, and your boazu bag are fantastic source material. Mine won't be anything like as beautiful, but I will shamelessly copy some of the details :)...

    Strange marking out tool.

Thank you for your suggestions. Whitworth thread drawing seems favourite to me. I think granddad was still a maker rather than a designer or draughtsman at the end of his career, but maybe he was doing some drawing. Site spell check doesn't like Whitworth, grrrr.

    Strange marking out tool.

I have spent this evening making some three legged stools for a school production. I marked out the seats to drill holes and thought the angles looked a bit off. I dug out a protractor and it turns out that my 60/30 degree set square is actually 55/35 degree. I inherited the tool from my...

    Celtic knot designer

Thank you, thank you. I have been using Steve Abott's program for a while, but I can't get it to work on the latest machine. This seems a little more versatile. Nice piece of work Essexman. When I've tried to work out that sort of knot on paper or in cord it has taken me ages.

    Oak bench finsihing

Thanks for your answer. One of my Scouts made an Oak seat a few years ago. It got infested with a fungus and crumbled away. We burnt it at a later camp in the end. Until then I though Oak would be fine too.

    Oak bench finsihing

My Explorers are making some rustic oak benches for the local Jubilee Woods. The benches will be split logs with horizontal log legs. Hopefully the benches will be fairly well progressed by next week. How should we go about finishing them, so they will last well living outside? Thanks.

    Escaping with Paracord

Like this: http://www.backpacker.com/survival-stuck-on-a-cliff/skills/14768 To be fair I've never tried it on a vertical surface, but I understand that it works. Genuine Paracord should be plenty strong enough (heat effects excepted), not sure about the level of friction. I'm not going to...

    Metal machining.

I have model making lathe and mill. I should be able to help. Again, pictures would be helpful. Do you know if it is steel, aluminium or plastic?

    Advice on WIP wallet, please.

My little sister gave me a pile of dyed leather offcuts for christmas. (Thanks for the bag of rubbish, Sarah!) I've started a new wallet with it. I've got to this stage: But I'm not sure about a closure. I've got a load of poppers and one of those is doing good service on my multitool...

On behalf of an Explorer Scout.

Charlie is very happy with the sound. I've not heard it through an amp yet, but it's nice unplugged. The strings sit a little high, I understand it is slighlty trickier to play, that is mostly my fault. It is a bit sad for me how few of our Scouts have ever used a knife or saw when they start...

    Dog fur

I shouldn't use this forum. Too many things to try.

With thanks to Rod Paradise.. A few pics of some jewellery he commissioned from me.

I really like the trees, very intricate work and look like a pig to make. All the best with your plans for the future.

On behalf of an Explorer Scout.

An ex Scout of mine, now an Explorer has been making this in my workshop over the last two years! Ash body, Walnut on the back. Pink Ivory controls. Charlie has learnt a fair bit about Table saws, Routers, Spokeshaves, Chisels, Bandsaws, Lathes and Pillar drills in the process. I've been really...

    Casting a perfect mirror image?

I don't know of any trick, sadly. Would one of these help: steel-profile-gauge

    Thirtieth birthday knife.

A friend of mine reached his thirtieth last month. He has always been happy with his Mora so never bought a flashy knife. I made this one as a present for him. Oak burr scales. Stainless Mora blade. Brass and plastic mosaic pin, for a proud Cornishman!

    Pyrography with Explorers.

I'm doing a few evenings with a friend's Explorer section, across town from my own Troop. This week I brought along some Pyrography kit, showed them a few techniques and let them experiment. Here are some of the things they did. The last one is most sickening, I've never managed...

Anyone made a jig for when making bracelets etc?

I've made a few jigs for jewellery making and the like. What patterns did you want to make? Could you put a couple of the youtube links on here so we can see what you want to replicate?

    I've been naughty!

Happy wood wood ruining! Just come back in from the workshop after a Woggle making session, as it happens. Looking forward to pictures of your work. ......and I hate you, what a bargain!!

    Oak logs

We have just come back from summer camp. When we arrived on site there was an over extended Oak limb that had fallen off. We (well, the Scouts!) cut it up to clear come space. The site crew said it was fine to burn it or use it as we saw fit. Some of it was burned (eventually). We cut and...
