    Staghorn Sumac Bowdrill

Firelite, The issue I had with your comment was that you seemed to be implying that "any wood dust would do it" (transition from smoldering to flame). To illustrate my point that not all wood dust is capable of producing an ember, have a look at Cedrik Grenier's video below at around the 15:00...

    Staghorn Sumac Bowdrill

Firelite, the quantity of dust produced is irrelevant if that dust is not in the correct form to produce an ember, let alone a flame. Based on that, your comment that "Any wood dust would do it, but would usually have to be in more bulky quantities" is false.

    Staghorn Sumac Bowdrill

Not so sure that "any wood dust would do it". It seems to be a function of the condition of the dust that is produced, if it's too dark (charred) it won't even ignite if a flame is held up to it. This dust was lighter and less charred. Sumac has some interesting properties, for instance, it...

An Afternoon of Cross Country Skiing

I thought I would take advantage of the recent snowfall and spend the afternoon cross country skiing. Came across a group playing hockey on the pond which was appropriate since it was "Hockey Day" in Canada when this was filmed yesterday. There is a little bit of bushcraft content at the end...

    Staghorn Sumac Bowdrill

I don't believe you have sumac growing in the UK but I thought you would find this interesting. While practicing friction fire using the bowdrill I was able to blow the ember into flame without a tinder bundle or coal extender . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9_U8_j1nS4

Teflon as a Bearing Block for Bow and Drill

Thanks Chris, you'd be surprised how many hobbies I have :), no rockets yet though. Yes, it does wear. The original divot in the larger block was drilled to approximately one third it's thickness and it is now about half way through. I've probably used it hundreds of times and it's still...

    Survival Bracelet

The trouble with the knitting needles is that they have no way of attaching the paracord to the ends. I suppose if you were able to cut them short, drill and tap them they would work but that seems to be a bit of work. Another option I have seen is to use the aluminum posts made for photo...

Teflon as a Bearing Block for Bow and Drill

My favorite bearing block for bow and drill friction fire is made from Teflon. I had some left over from a telescope build and made these two up. The larger one is just held as is in the hand with the middle finger through the lanyard. This one is a knife fob that is held as shown...

    Survival Bracelet

Thanks everyone for the kind comments but I can't take credit for the idea. Have a look at the "Paracordist" website http://www.paracordist.com. He makes and sells but I made mine by following his tutorial on youtube.

    Survival Bracelet

Haven't posted much here so I thought I'd show this survival bracelet I made recently following the Paracordist's tutorial and patterned after his "Best Survival Bracelet". Woodland camo paracord with jute twine woven through and a ferro rod toggle. I didn't have anything for a scraper but am...

The Ultimate "What is this Fungi?" thread.

This looks like a burl but if you could reach it and cut off a piece you would know for sure.

Did this ever happen? I'm wondering how you found the carbon version vs. the stainless.

Hello from the Land of "The True North Strong and Free"

I presently reside in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada and have enjoyed the outdoors since I was a boy. Spent my early childhood in Africa where my parents were missionaries in Swaziland. I am a British citizen and hope to do more traveling and camping in the UK when I retire. My interests include...
