We've had a magnificently entertaining series on Discovery channel called 'Hunting Chris Ryan' which also involved a team of experts hunting down Chris Ryan, who showed some excellent skill and tricks to keep up his hunter force in all sorts of terrain.

I've used sotol for both hearth and drill. The flowering stems I've pruned were quite thick at the bottom (4cm diameter) and tapered to 5 mm at the top (1 meter long I guess). I used a quite narrow drill tip (+/-7mm) for this successfull attempt. The hearth was cut from a lower segment...

I've given both techniques a few attempts, also the split branch method. All with only limited success. I also had no ember yet from the single hole method, because of an unlucky finger rubbing the dust in the hole. It does spread out a lot when you have no notch. Also with the two twig...
