    Vehicle Dependent Expedition Guide

Yes, but that's sold out IIRC - so if you want one of the new print run I'd get my name on the list.

    Vehicle Dependent Expedition Guide

Some of you may know of the legendary Vehicle Dependent Expedition Guide already. Second hand it sells for stupid money on Ebay and Amazon; try around £200 It seems that there is going to be a reprint and that one can pre-order it. It is probably the finest guide for anyone who has any...

    Charcoal kilns

Has anyone made a charcoal kiln using an old oil drum? I've used the large kilns that measure about 6ft across but want something smaller for some woodlands that I have just got. I am restoring them to Coppice rotation and as they haven't been worked for at least 50 years there will be a lot...

    Kelly/Volcano/Irish/Ghillie Kettles

Kelly/Volcano/Irish/Ghillie Kettles Has anyone seen any good deals on this type of kettle? I've had a look at Fleabay but they are no better than buying direct.

    Candle Lanterns

Many thanks for that - mine was "borrowed" by some piece of S*&t - may he/she rot in Hell.

    Candle Lanterns

Does anyone know of an alternative to the UCO candle lanterns? I'm sure that they're very good but I cannot justify £25+ for one - also, I'm sure that I never paid that sort of money for my old lantern 'cos I'm too mean :)

    Folding knife wanted

Has anyone some suggestions for a folder? I want one for my son in law and would not want to spend more than £50 to £60. Also, if it does "fold" and locks the blade, does that make it illegal to carry, use and own?

    Ray Mears Woodsman Shirt

Its a shame when some "celebrity" endorsement puts one off buying a product, isn't it. I've found Craghoppers to be quite reasonable kit but I would prefer not to have poor Mr Grylls name stuck on it.

    Ray Mears Woodsman Shirt

If you buy something then you are pleased with it: If you are sold something then, generally, you are not pleased with it When I have had to teach new Staff I have always tried to impress this on them. If you say " I bought this car / lawnmower / shirt" then you can be pretty d**n sure that...

    Stainless steel vs Carbon steel

This has probably been asked before but here goes. What's better, stainless or carbon steel for a blade? I should imagine that you can get a better edge on a carbon steel than stainless? The advantage of stainless is that it shouldn't rust or discolour to same degree that ordinary steel...

    Which Saw

The only problem I've had is when I forget that its a pull saw. I also like the way blade is kept safe whereas with the majority of this type of saw, the blade folds over and it "don't 'arf 'urt Doctor" :)

    Firelighting methods

I think that's the answer, isn't it? Time, how much have you got to spare. I just want a wet. I haven't got time to faf about because that's time lost when I could be cutting. I just felt a bit of a fraud, that's all.

    Which Saw

I use one of these Wilkinson pruning saws. I have used Silkies and cannot for the life of me say that they are worth the money charged for them.

    Firelighting methods

Okey Dokey - Fire lighting? What's the best way? I know that a bucket of diesel is fairly effective but it is cheating really. The reason that I ask is that I was working in the Woods the other day and realised that I had wasted 2 hours starting a fire So what's best? slice off some Silver...

my edit to make quote shorter I never said that the courses were a rip off. What I was getting at is that £300 is a lot of money, £600 is even more etc When I started doing a bit of gardening I thought that 3rd Party insurance would be a good idea. The cheapest I could get was £250...

    Firesteels

Firesteels: I could never understand why anyone would bother to make a smart bit of wood turning to put on one. Now I know, the stupid bit of C**p plastic that I have on mine has come adrift. What wood should one use to make a fancy end? I assume that it needs to be a decent bit of hardwood...
