    Drying Birch polypore (Piptoporus betulinus)?

Plaster 1 I have no clue were to take the plaster off the polypore. This thread shows one example: http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33686&highlight=birch+polypore. What is done there is the pore layer that is cut away. You can do that by only inserting your finger between the...

    Drying Birch polypore (Piptoporus betulinus)?

Maggot All of the infected polypores I saw had the same characteristics. That means that infection might quite easily be detected which is good news. No – at least at first sight – tiny holes that are undetectable.

    Drying Birch polypore (Piptoporus betulinus)?

Mrcairney, I’m doing demos at museums. They would be very decorative and excellent for showing the difference to the normal sized ones. I’d use the smaller ones for cutting them up into plasters.

    Drying Birch polypore (Piptoporus betulinus)?

Thanks a lot for that very helpful information. I a bit more confident now :). Toddy, I think I will put it in a plastic bag tomorrow and spray insecticide in it, close it and open it an hour later. With a bit of luck the insects should be dead by than. You are right the mushroom is quite...

Birch Tar that didn't set hard

Toddy: Thanks for your nice comment. You say “It's usual to mix it [birch bark tar] with fine charcoal if it's to be used like a glue since this helps to stop it shattering.” That is the first time that I hear someone taking about adding charcoal (powder/dust). I always heard that the...

Birch Tar that didn't set hard

Jon: You asked how to filter the pine resin. You need two pots, one metal sive with very small holes, a scoop and a spoon. First heat some of the resin in one pot. Two to three minutes before filtering the resin put the second pot on the “fire” and the metal sive on top of it. That will heat...

Birch Tar that didn't set hard

Some interesting points have been raised yesterday that I’d like to comment one by one. Pipistrelle: You suggest to mix “some hot pine resin” into the birch bark tar. How much is “some”. Could you give any, even approximate, percentage tar/resin? I would be grateful too if you could give...
