Some interesting observations re. hammocks & webbing

Try polypropylene webbing instead of nylon. That is what the commercial hammock makers like Speer use and is readily available in any fabric shop. Nylon webbing can melt together when knotted and placed under load. Polypro can too, but not as much. Use an Ed Speer 4 Wrap knot or Risk's Improved...

    Folder...Help!

Good point about the plastic handle, Martyn. It's tough as nails (dropped mine countless times on concrete, etc.), but sure seems flimsy the first time you pick one up. If you want something a little more traditional or aesthetically pleasing, you'll have to pay more.

    Folder...Help!

Hoodoo would be shocked and disappointed if I didn't throw my hat in the ring for the Griptilian. I have a 550 and 556, and both rock the house. Still can't decide which size and blade shape I like best. My 550 is coming up on her third birthday in a couple months and she still hasn't touched...

    Chicken of the woods

Morels and morel hunting are two of the finer things in life. This is the time when they start popping up here in Michigan, but I probably won't get to do any shrooming this year. The horror.

Getting your hole....in a peice of wood.

The same way they made fire, using a hand drill, bow drill or pump drill. The spindle had a stone bit on the end (think arrowhead) or they dipped it in sand to abrade away the material. I had a link with some nice pictures but can't find it right now. :-(

    Disposing of waste

You leave it lay so other critters that like that sort of thing can get some benefit from it. Gutpiles seldom last long in the woods if there are carnivores and/or scavengers around.

Carnivore scat - Shenandoah National Park, VA

Coyote. Possibly feral dog, but I'll wager coyote. No wolves or mountain lion in those parts, that I am aware of anyway. Definitely not bear sh!t, and way too big for fox. That leaves coyote, feral dogs (I say feral because of the fur in it) or a human with a strange diet.

Improvise and addapt or home made kit?

You won't get any from film containers. That is an urban legend. Kodak Envirnmental Services: Information on 35 mm Plastic Film Containers "Newspaper and magazine articles have mentioned "toxic residues" in the containers which might come from the film. There are none. The chemicals...

    Poisons for hunting

Stew, the arms on the Judo point are meant to keep the arrow from penetrating the game. In hunting small game and birds, you usually just want to "brain" the critter. Old timers used to make blunts by slipping an empty brass cartridge over their arrows to take squirrels, rabbits and birds.

    Paracord

I'm not a paracord expert, but all the real stuff I've ever used has the tightly woven outer sheath as shown in Martyn's picture. The cheap junk is quite common over here, too, so don't feel bad. I guess we are lucky that the good stuff is fairly easy to find. Just FYI, the last bit I...

    Spoon

The Boxwood we typically see as an ornamental shrub is Buxus. B. sempervirens (Weller boxwood) is one variety you'll see in nurseries, as is B. microphylla asiatic (Winter Gem Boxwood). Stew, Cornus Florida is a Flowering Dogwood tree. They grow like weeds in many parts of the US. It's quite...

Improvise and addapt or home made kit?

I'm always looking for ways to make kit at little or no expense. Billy cans from coffee and tomato juice cans, stoves from Coke cans, match safes from plumbing parts, you name it. Thinking up and making the gear if half the fun, even if the experiments don't always work. 8-)

    MOD Issue Knife

I'm still amazed that some people actually pay money for "Ranger Bands." I walked into a bike shop last summer and asked for an old inner tube. The guy looked at me funny, but offered as many as I wanted.

    New Petzl LED head torch...

Thanks, Martyn. Looks like I'll have to spend some time on Candlepower Forums getting caught up with the latest and greatest before I buy my next light.

    Poisons for hunting

Bob, here's a pic of a flu-flu, along with two normally fletched arrows for comparison. Not very good, but it was the first site I found that had a picture of a flu-flu. :-? Regular fletching Flu-Flu Here are typical arrowheads. Broadhead for larger critters A...

    New Petzl LED head torch...

Martyn, how long does the battery last with the 5 watt head? I was checking them out in a catalog earlier but they didn't have any runtime figures. Very tempting. 8-)

    A few more questions

Wow, some good answers so far. 1. Washing: Tony mentioned baby wipes. I carry them everywhere. Great for cleanup after changing a tire on the side of the road, or killing some of the B.O. out in the woods. Nice addition to T.P., too. Another "must have" is Purell hand sanitizer. A...

    New tinder

Jake, it burns like mad, providing it has some sort of wick. Vaseline-soaked cotton balls burn for several minutes. Great tinder. 8-)

Seen it all now. PORTABLE PROPANE CAMPFIRE !!

I saw a guy using a gas-powered blender on his boat (docked at a marina) a couple summers ago. It looked like it was made out of an old string trimmer. Noisy and smelly, but the dorky-looking dude had lots of women in bikinis flocking around for daquiris. Gotta give the guy credit for that...
