    Heating a tent

Another option for heating is to put just-boiled water into a canteen and use it as a hot water bottle. Wrapped in a towel it works pretty well.

Mould problems when drying and storing Kind Alfred Cakes

Thanks everyone :D Yeah I've seen things eating them before (not these ones). I will try wrapping them in paper and putting them on a radiator for a few days. Thanks again!

Mould problems when drying and storing Kind Alfred Cakes

Hi all. My Dad gave me a few King Alfred cakes (aka Crampballs, Daldinia concentrica) about 6 months ago and I stored them in an airtight tub for a few months. Then I noticed they had some small spots of white mould growing on them, so I threw away the worst affected, wiped the rest down with a...

I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a handful of these for various kits if there are some going spare. Happy to pay towards S&H.

    Pocket stove (or similar)

I have a SS emberlit that is discoloured from heat but actually hardly used (maybe 4 times). Comes with the cross piece small pot adapter and the little sleeve thing. Would happily trade for a Buck 110, or an old cross red Victorinox farmer, or a UKPK PE in orange G10. That's about all I'm...

Finding north with a wristwatch, having trouble.

Great info on those links bearbait, thanks. Sigh. I'm confusing myself now. Checked today at 6:30AM and 3PM and it worked with north being at the end of the line on each occasion. Maybe it changes based on the time of year? Maybe it only doesn't work around 6 (makes sense). Or maybe I was just...

Finding north with a wristwatch, having trouble.

Even this is wrong I'm afraid. Just leave the computer and try it in the morning and again in the evening. It doesn't work.

Finding north with a wristwatch, having trouble.

That's simply not true. Try it at 6AM and 6PM.

Finding north with a wristwatch, having trouble.

Thanks ged, that looks like a good read. I'll put it on the list :) I do enjoy navigation, maps and map reading etc. Yeah the wristwatch method does look a bit naff, but it's mentioned in a good number of places and I wanted to put it to the test a bit. One day I'll try to navigate using only...

I would have checked it myself but I'm moving house so it's packed :D

Finding north with a wristwatch, having trouble.

Yep, I'm accounting for that :) Good to keep in mind though. Yes, the sun will be in a different place, but the hour hand won't be, so I'll make the bisection and end up thinking north's in a different place. Here's a diagram illustrating my problem If you apply the method in the morning...

Finding north with a wristwatch, having trouble.

Hang on, this can't be right. That means if you check it at 9PM and again at 9AM, north will be in a different place. You must have to adjust the method based on whether it's morning or afternoon? I mean obviously if it's morning you can say "well, the sun's in the east" and work out north...

Finding north with a wristwatch, having trouble.

That makes a lot more sense! So clockwise from the hour, half way to 12 is north. That's spot on :D Cheers mate!

Finding north with a wristwatch, having trouble.

Whoops, I meant 4.30 :P That would still put north at 4.30 not 10.30 though. I must be doing something stupid but I just can't work this out. I'll revisit it tomorrow when I can get a better look at where the sun is, I might have mis-sighted it.
