No, you're not the only one. I agree completely. Knives, by definition, are for cutting. I feel the "Leatherman" type multi-tools are more useful but I seldom carry one of those, either. However, I always carry a knife - usually, more than one .
If you're in the U.S. Bowstick Archery (www.Bowstick.com) has a nice selection of bows in various stages of completion - from basicly sticks to nearly finished bows. Nice way to learn by doing - and they have on-line instruction if you need it.
