    Fantastic flint strikers

This might get long..... well I've finally gotten settled in back in Canada after living in the UK for 2 1/2 years. While in the UK I really enjoyed coming into this site and learning a bit about bushcraft the way you fellers do it. I'm a member of the "alberta traditional bowhunters...

Foraging / surviving from the land

It would be a lot easier to forage here and survive than in parts of Canada. There's no end of rabbits for easy pickings either, I know they lack fat but it would be easy to get all of your daily protein. Couple that with the fact that there are green plants year round and you've got a place...

    Hair on rawhide

So what you've got now is a dried, hair on hide? You can soak it in water and wood ashes for a few days until the hair slips easily. Then remove the hair and epidermis and then if you dry it agin you'll have rawhide. If you want to tan it then don't dry it out after dehairing it, proceed onto...

Tips for locating a good camping spot in Boreal forest?

Come to think about it if y see black spruce, that's a swampy bugger of a place to camp. Tall timber is an obvious good place although tall timber is usually a ways back from the river. If you follow a small creek upstream from the main river it's usually going to be swampy. Sometimes a bend...

A very, very rare bird suffers death by wind turbine.

I talked to a guy in Canada who does daily maintenance on one of the dreaded wind turbine, he is an outdoorsman and a bit of a conservationist like all of us are, so I believe he's telling the truth. He says that in a period of about two years of daily inspections on the site he only found ONE...

    Mint!!!

I'm not sure if this works with mint but it does with lavender. Get a big jar and layer leaves and granulated sugar, pack it in nice and tight, then leave (leaf?) it for a few days. The sugar is hygroscopic (sp?) and will absorb the water from the leaves and make nice mint sugar.

Tips for locating a good camping spot in Boreal forest?

As romantic as it seems camping beside most canadian rivers is tough to do. We run into the same problems in the west, the large slow rivers are muddy on the edges, the fast rocky rivers have steep banks to try and get up and over. The vegetation always grows best beside a river so it's always...

Buying a bow drill kit - why?

It does seem wrong to guy a bow drill on some level. The braintan hides that I've done mean a lot more to me than the ones I've purchased and now tha I know how to do it i'll never buy again. But brain tanning is a complex skill that involves a lot of backbreaking labour and needs a suitable...

    trying the Dakota fire hole.

I have to admit I've not tried the method yet but I will soon. I talked about "gasification" on a different thread, the one about top down burning. I think that if a feller used split wood or branches about 2" in diameter and packed them vertically into the hole then lit it from the top there...

Theoretical and academic (for now) question about wood

Wow, some interesting ideas. First off, liners are indeed original and traditional, and have been used for a very long time. Nothing modern about them at all, even in 1917 they were authentic. Lodge pole pine grows in very thick stands, at least the good poles come from thick stands. They are...

    Cleaning a skull

Look up skull bleaching or European mounts and you'll find instructions. Burying it will work eventually but it will be very stained, maybe ou like that look. To get the brains out use a wire in the hole at the back of the skull and mash it all it then drain them out. You can flush water...

    Getting knackered screws out

Yup a claw hammer is the ticket for this one, just be careful when you get the claws started. You might look at a very slim pry bar, some have nail pullers in the end too. Remember it ain't rocket science it's demolition! Have fun and be sure to get rid of your destructive urges while doing...

    Takedown Arrow question?

I believe the threads on a common arrow insert are 8/32 machine threads. I've known people who made two piece take down arrows for hunting bows and they say there isn't much if any effect on spine. There might be an adverse evvect with a three piece arrow though.

    Anchoring knot

It's called the steeple mans knot isn't it? I didn't read all the posts and the name might have been mentioned, and yes it uses a sheep shank with the middle cut. I know I sure wouldn't trust my life to it but its still fun to know.

Ummmm, John just pointed out how cheap the cold steel spears now. I paid a heck of a price for it so I guess I'll keep it....offer withdrawn.
