    Robin Hood !!

Having done traditional archery for the past 6 years, I knew I was finally improving when my ratio of "Robin Hoods" started to climb. I have a glass jar on my workshop bench with all of the destroyed nocks from my "Robin Hoods"- at last count there were 15 of them. With carbon fiber arrow...

I'm old school- I don't carry an electronic emergency device like a SPOT or EPIRB, unless you count my iPhone 6. My emergency signalling gear consists of: 1. fire-making tools- a bic lighter, ferro rod, lifeboat matches and tinder 2. 2 signalling mirrors, a military signalling mirror and the...

what useless kit have you bought?

My useless kit has always been stuff that I have received as gifts- usually from well meaning friends and family who were trying to get me something that they thought was appropriate to my outdoor interests. In no particular order: - toy carabiners that couldn't stand up to anything stronger...

    ILBE Assault Pack

I have the Arcteryx LEAF version of this pack, called the Charlie pack. The ILBE patrol pack was built around this design- it's built to a very high standard, it's tough but heavy. It doesn't carry as well as a dedicated pack for hiking and backpacking, but does allow for a lot of organization.

    Multi tool vs Penknife

I tend to only bring a multitool on trips where there is the possibility of doing equipment repairs is high, like cycling or backcountry ski trips. The greater selection of tool options, especially with additions like a Leatherman bit insert kit makes it handy and convenient If it's just a...

Recommend me a one man tent

If it's for bike touring, then I would go for these options rather than a 1 man tent: black diamond megalight: http://blackdiamondequipment.com/en/tents-and-bivys/mega-light-tent-BD8005070000ALL1.html or a hennessey hammock: http://www.hennessyhammock.com/ These out of the box options will...

    Haida carving knife blades

These Haida carving blades are definitely not sold with handles- the assumption is that the user will fashion the most suitable handle for their style of carving. I have managed to make my set extremely sharp through the use of wet and dry paper that was glued onto different sized wodden...

    Laavu, Bell tent or Yurt

Yurt if it's going to be semi-permanent- there are scores of yurts here in the Pacific Northwest and they take rain and snow loads well, are easily modified to take a wood stove, flooring, and windows, and are warm and cozy. Bell tent would be my second choice, and a teepee last.

    First Axe?

Another vote for the Estwing- quality, durability at an excellent price - now that's value! The now make a variety of axes and hatchets, some of which lend themselves easily to bushcraft.
