    Machete or Axe

I have found with a fair bit of trial and error that the best compromise blade for me (and make no mistake one blade for all jobs is a massive compromise) has been the Condor village parang. Having said that I am still yet to try a good quality Khukhri which Is the only knife left now that I...

20 things only real campers know

17 was the clincher for me. I come prepared! Everyone in the family knows not to drink from the Bolt!

    Just five things

The trouble with these challenges is that they have to be done in our countryside and that means you can't muck about to much with the land or the creatures on it. Try anything Ed Stafford like in our fair land and you will end up in trouble. The older I get the more I realise that a knife and...

    Forum virus

This is the first time I have logged on and actually got to this site for a few days now. My browser has strongly advised staying away with a big red danger screen flashing away every time I put in the BCUK address.

The 'I've found a bargain' thread

I will add this to the thread then as I think this is a terrific price. I bought one of these second hand for more than this a couple of years ago! A Mora Buschraft Triflex knife for £11.95 from Moonraker knives. It is the weekly deal on the website http://www.moonrakerknives.co.uk/specials.html

    Billhook and sheath

That is an amazing price. If I had even half a need for another large chopper I would buy it.

    New Zippo Bag

I could argue that studs don't suit a soft pocket but the reality is I had some olive Velcro handy and it was easier to just whack it on and get the job over with.

Introducing The Tread - A New Leatherman Tool

As a bit of fun it is fine but I could not take a thing like that seriously.

    New Zippo Bag

I was going to stitch it on but ended up using contact adhesive in the end. I made sure the glue spread was good on both sides and clamped them to the cloth overnight. It seems pretty well stuck on for life. I was lucky and found the Velcro last year at a car boot sale. A metre long strip for 50p!

    New Zippo Bag

This was not scientific. It was just a quick grab and shake and then open up. the magnets held as did the Velcro. If I was out for the day the contents would be increased quite a bit but this does at least give you an idea.

    New Zippo Bag

I did think about gluing the magnetic catches but tipping the bag upside down fully loaded still did not make the magnets pop open so I did not bother. I have added Velcro to little pockets at the ends of the bag though and they are now much more usable.

    Fieldcrafter UK Knife

Thats a great price for a stonking blade. If I did not already have one I would buy it like a shot. They are amazing wood splitters.

    Move over Walking Dead

I thought Z nation was appalling. Strangely I watched all of them though. It does draw you in once you have seen the first four episodes but by gum it is cheesy. The Walking Dead is like art in comparison. It is one of those shows that you at some point during every episode you ask yourself "Why...

    Svea 123 and Bergans smock

You can use a guitar string as a pricker. A G if memory serves.

    Bushcraft in schools.

My wife is a Forest schools teacher in a primary school and that essentially is low level bushcraft. She is certainly better at getting a fire going than I am and probably has more wood fires going in one year than most of us do in ten. Schools are now very much into kids exploring the world...

    Sad News regarding Alan Gough(Humpback)

It's always sad when a fellow traveler on the same road as you finds themselves at their destination to soon. Reading his obituary makes you realise that he managed to cram a good deal into those years though and did not waste the time that was alloted to him.

Ridgeline Grizzly jackets down to £49.99!

They must be selling out fast then. They had all sizes apart from large when I looked yesterday! The Olive version has a full compliment of sizes mind you even if it is a tenner more in price.

Ridgeline Grizzly jackets down to £49.99!

I see that Uttings have got a bit of a sale on. The Grizzly jacket seems to be the best bargain as I have never seen them on sale this low online before. No good for campers that like an open fire but for everyone else they seem like a decent option...

We didn't do the Green thing.

Modern life seems to be a bit of a trade off. These days anything leisure or information based is cheap and plentiful. My phone alone has the internet, radio, albums, books, films and TV shows on it and all in hi def and stereo. Travel has never been easier and again my phone can translate...
