    Trekking poles necessary ?

Hi Stew, Sounds like marketing nonsense to me, how on earth they get from not glueing on a tip to "designed to come off under stress" is insanity It's not "designed" to break away, it's just not glued on so it can easily be replaced. Your google results only has 1 hit on that search...

    Trekking poles necessary ?

As i say it really depends on where you walk and the type of terrain you walk in/on. As a example around the Lake district i've had many instances where if i'd have had my hand through the strap the hiking pole would have caused a fall, a fall which i'm certain would have broken the pole. On...

    Trekking poles necessary ?

Can't really understand how you can think that pole tips are designed to snap  Do you mean the plastic section that holds the tip? If so i can safely say that out of the many poles i've used and bought over the years not one had any failure point built into it. But even if they did...

    Trekking poles necessary ?

Really can't recommend strongly enough that you revisit your opinion. Using hiking poles is absolutely no guarantee that you won't fall over, if you do you want the poles as far away from you as possible. If you have a downward force on the pole then they're extremely strong, if a pole gets...

    Trekking poles necessary ?

If you don't feel you need them now then i think it's always a bit dodgy doing something because others are doing it or because some bloke off the internet says you should. You don't need hiking poles, some are convinced they offer a better hiking experience others don't. I would recommend...

    Backpack

Unless you have medical problems or are built like Dorian Yates the shoulder pad widths shouldn't really need much adjustment. You say the shoulder straps are pulled outwards. That to me sounds like the pack you've got isn't adjusted correctly. Reason i say that is the shoulders should take...

    Carrying a kit

Speaking as a hiker/trail runner, it depends. It depends on the weather, the season, where i'm going and if i'm going alone or with someone. Living in a very active earthquake zone it's rare i don't have a whistle within reach, so that's a given. Other than that on most of my summer day...

Thoughts On The Hilleberg Nammatj 2 GT Please

Hilleberg have a great reputation but there have been a fair reports of problems with their zippers in the last few years. Thing that would put me off is the 4kg, absolutely no way you'd find me lugging a 4kg tent around but then i'm more a hiker than a camper so it really depends what you...

    Removing a tick with a Q tip.

Again absolutely no problem here with small tick removal, the lasso type device is so much easier to use on smaller ticks than a V type removal tool. The land around our summer house is infested with the things, our dog is a little 5kg Jack Russell and we've pulled well over 20 ticks off her...

    Removing a tick with a Q tip.

Must have removed at least 100 ticks a year from the dog using the lasso type, 3-4 years use and that's a LOT of ticks, i've not yet had a tick that's not come out whole though.

Is there really any need for camoflage?

I think to even bring it into the same conversation as ethics gives it more validity than it deserves. People wear what ever colour they want, if a person wants a red or yellow tent then i don't see how it's anyone else's business. Sorry it that seems to come across as rude, but if we start...

Is there really any need for camoflage?

It's a bit sad when people think they are privileged enough to tell people what they should and should not be wearing or camping in when outdoors. Personally i'd sooner see 5 orange tents rather that 1 single fire scar, or rubbish the previous camper has left behind. End of the day we're all...

    Waterproofs

For low activity levels it's pretty easy to stay dry, i've got some 1 piece motorbike waterproofs that have kept me dry when fishing for a few years now, throw in some active work though and i sweat buckets in em. For hiking the balance is even tougher because you need to balance the weight of...

    Comfortable camping... Is this true?!

Looks like you have a well rounded opinion Ste goodjob As i say one of the best aspects of this forum is the varied activities carried out by it's members, pretty much anything you want to do in the outdoors someone here does it on a regular basis. That large experience pool is usually a good...

    Comfortable camping... Is this true?!

Squidders, i have reported your post. Not really sure why you feel the need to try and belittle and insult others to be able to put your point across, but i don't think it's right. Please take a min, take a breath, relax and look up the definition of camping...

    Comfortable camping... Is this true?!

As i say though it 100% depends on the context of "camping". If your camping on a warm dry bank holiday weekend, next to your fully loaded up car then sure why not throw everything in including the kitchen sink. If on the other hand you are camping half way up a mountain after having hiked 15km...

    Comfortable camping... Is this true?!

The good thing about this forum is the different ways we all enjoy the outdoors, some barely step away from their cars, others prefer to go varying distances on foot. So comfort needs to be taken in the context of what we are doing, As an example, a folding chair makes a massive difference to...

    A question for the cyclists!

No need to trim those, just loosen the clamps and slide it down the bar, don't even need to use hairspray with those clamp on grips. Only downside is you'll loose 2cm (or the width of the bar ends) of handlebar space, but with the wide bars these days that's rarely a problem.
