    The stark Truth about Birch-tapping.

    The stark Truth about Birch-tapping.

We used sealed wood with wax and resin. It comes off after a couple of years. The same with tar. The sap forces it off from the inside and insects attack the outside. It does not last long. Champagne corks painted with tar performed best. But the trees still rotted from the inside.

How the Wild West was won with Ray Mears

I think Ray is at home with the BBC. This is the first programme since Northern Wilderness that the whole family has shut up and watched. It is gentle and packed full of knowledge and history. More of this Ray.

Anyone else enjoying the glorious weather?

Do not feel too sorry for him. He has been in the woods since six doing donkey things and moosing about whilst I do the cooking and get the monster to bed.

I use a kettle and an oven. This combination I find fits snugly into my kitchen surrounded by a house. Not as light as that army stove thingy. But it keeps you warm in winter, has a roof to keep off rain, warm water and best of all. Carpets.

Bear Grylls producer snake bite....../Gore warning !!

Okay, makes sense. But the venom does get injected via the 'inside' of the tooth at high pressure straight into the blood stream. They are like tiny little hyperdermic needles. Jonathan has a few set in resin from juveniles to adult. Rubbing the bite would do nothing except to speed up the...
