    Backwoods Veidemann Course Pics

I have finally got around to posting some pics of the Veidemann course run by backwoods survival school. I had a brilliant time in Norway with a great bunch of people. The skills and activities were spot on and we experienced sunshine, gale force winds, snow, sleet, rain but this just added to...

Why isn't Ron Hood given enough Credit?

Well done Dave, you are bang on with your description of bushcraft as it is now. It seems that most people that shout the loudest about what bushcraft is do not practice bushcraft but merely bushcamping with all the new kit and clothing that goes with. Putting up a tarp and hammock, cooking you...

    Close to Chester? (north wales?)

Delamere Forest is quite big but you might get yourself arrested if you start lighting fires in there. Like I said though it's quite big.:)

    Wild Camping in Scotland.

Yes I would agree with Loch Lomond area. I once walked the west Highland Way From Milngavie on the North side of Glasgow to Fort William around 100 miles The route took us past the East bank of Loch Lomond over Conic and onto Inversnaid near Rob Roy's Cave Great woodlands and fantastic...

    What's in a name...?

The old, "what's in a name" chestnut. "Wilderness Skills" compared to "Bushcrafter" Hang on though, I don't really practice either of them. I think most people actually practice "Bushcamping" like myself. Many people buy from a shop or an Internet site, all the bits required to assemble a...

    Back from the Wilderness Gathering

I really enjoyed the gathering this year lots more to see and some new schools teaching.I was on the lookout for BCUK members but didn't see any. Were you all wearing camouflage and hiding in the woods? Unfortunately I spent more time talking to people and ended up missing the classes I wanted...

Win a place on the Backwoods Survival Backwoodsman course

Great competition Tony, It would be great to see more of these on the forum. I was on the backwoodsman course a couple of years ago. It was indeed a fantastic weekend with lots of new skills learned. I do look out for Patricks posts but he does not seem to have posted anything for a while...

    Natural Shelter Building

Nice one British Red, I made one just like that on a course in Wales a few years ago. I think the spars were to thin for the amount of bracken they had to support. It let in water like a sieve and the middle collapsed after 2 days of rain. Soggy green maggot three nights in a row. How do you...

Interesting stuff Ed. How thick was the goat skin and what length do you need for a good fishing line is it twisted up?

    Snares

I was taught that the legal snare (free running loop) was to hold the rabbit, it should be alive and just sitting with the snare around its neck not strangled. You then approach the rabbit and dispatch it.

    Best cordage material

Nice list there fenlander, I'm curious to how you make cordage from the inner stem of nettle. I thought it was just the outer layer that you used.

    Cordage for fishing line

I have a long held aspiration to catch a fish, on a fishing rig, made completely from natural materials, by me :) I have already made the complete set! hook, line and sinker and have experimented with various rigs . I have fished with it on many occasions but never caught a fish. Except...
