    Stationary engines

Used to have a Stirrup engine that i inherited from my grandfather. He was heavily into his engines and vintage bike (1900's White Heather) and used to display his stationary engine at steam rallies locally and as well as at places like Blandford for the Great Steam Rally.

What's the grill called that people use ?

This one was made from a repurposed reception chair with old rebar bars, the legs are all separate and just slide into the 'grill top', so you can have it at two different heights. Or i used to like to just make one in the woods. Most of the time though, i used to just put the pots and...

Heads up - Post office not sending sharps after 22th April

They used to ask me at the local post office what was in the packet, so one day when asked by a rather prim and proper lady behind the counter what i was sending, i said, just loud enough for everyone in the queue behind me to hear "adult toys without batteries", her face was a picture, lots of...

    Is it a stick?

It's strange you know, if i set out to carve a particular thing, by which i mean, fish, bird, animal, i usually struggle, like the other day, i had some really nice bits of Hazel with side branches, ah me thinks Stick Chickens, i've carved loads of them before, but this whole lot didn't happen...

    Is it a stick?

Started whittling a Hazel stick earlier with no particular project or outcome in mind, but looking at the shape of the stick as i was carving away my senile ol' mind could see a familiar shape, a little while later, ta daaaa - a Pipefish. Im tempted to get my late fathers paints out and paint...

Speed hooks and Yoyo reals are legal in UK

Poles are typically made from carbon fibre these days including the budget ones, although glass does still appear in really cheap junk from aliexpress and the like, lengthwise a typical pole these days will be a minimum of 14.5m ranging up to 16m and beyond. The short ones i think you are...

    Mini Bow Drill

Thanks Steve, nope, not heard a word from the Hospital yet, they are going to do both my hips first as they are worse than my knees, had my initial ortho appt in November, nothing from them since, chased them the other day and still no reply, which is pretty much par for the course.

    Mini Bow Drill

Cheers mate, i just take my time and enjoy the process, the bow in the pic took me half a day to make, i just whittled it down using increasing light cuts with a super sharp blade until a super smooth finish was achieved.

    Mini Bow Drill

Sat here in front of the pooter, bored, so grabbed a length of Hazel and turned it into a mini bow drill set. I've not made a set for about six years as i've not been fit/mobile/well enough to use it, so there was little point in making one, much the same with this one really, it's been an...

    What did you buy today?

Bit the bullet on one of these I used to fly all sorts of radio controlled model aircraft from gliders to helicopters, but gave up the hobby when i got to play with the real thing. Now ahem years later, at a loss as to what to do each day to keep myself sane while i wait for surgery, i...

    Hanger

Sat here this morning, bored, so grabbed a stick, put some Bowie on and grabbed a pocket knife and just started whittling to see what appeared, hour or so later i have this ahem pot hanger, and if not a pot hanger, it's a joined section of small cordage reels with a hanging hook on one end...

What are your favourite pocket knives?

Time for the Antonini Old Bear to come back out. I used this daily for nigh on two years until the SAK's came back into my favour, lovely little pocket knife that made my Opinels redundant. I much prefer the locking mechanism on this to the Opinel, which i always found would loosen fairly...
