I know there's a tradition that kuksas aren't used for milk, but does that apply to drinks with milk in them too?
Is there any reason not to use one for tea, coffee or hot chocolate (with milk)?
(Sorry if this isn't the right spot for this question - I thought those that make them would know...
My thought was for day-trips, when I'd only want to boil water for a brew/instant soup - it was the flatness I fancied.
Though for such purposes, a smaller version would probably suit me better.
Er...thread title says it all really.
It's this thing I'm talking about:

I'd be looking to use it on a meths stove or hexy. What do you think?
That's terrific peeps! Thanks very much!
The unknown one I had was great because it produced fat, hot sparks on my first attempt and never failed me. I've seen others struggle with their rods (snigger) and on trying them myself, had the same difficulty.
That's how I came to the conclusion that...
The title says it all really.
Lost my trusty firesteel and not sure of the make :dunno:
As I don't understand the technicalities of the composition of firesteels/ferro rods, can anyone enlighten me on what makes a good or bad one please?
Any recommendations or avoidance advice?
Cheers.
I'm no photographer myself, but when I spotted these I thought some of you may enjoy them.

This is a copy of a post I made on a similar thread last summer -
"If you don't mind I'll relate a tale which illustrates the need for, if not a "survival" kit, at least a "just in case" kit and more particularly not stuffed into the bottom of a rucksack but kept separately. Even in...
Thanks Salad. :thankyou:
According to the chap in the YouTube link that you very kindly provided, he boils his kuksas for 45 minutes in very salty water and then lets it dry slowly in an open plastic bag. The wood doesn't then need to be 'fed' with any kind of oil to prevent cracking - nothing...
Don't go to a big site where she'll see people 'glamping'. It might put horrible ideas into her head!
If you go wild camping or somewhere without facilities, make sure you take one of the ...er...toilet products. One of these perhaps http://www.thebrowncorporation.com/ or the 'Pocket Toilet'...
Although I very much enjoyed this programme as a whole, I did find myself getting a little irritated by Neil Oliver.
In his enthusiasm he does have a tendency to over-romanticise without apparent evidence - I'm referring to his assumptions behind ancient peoples' motivations and so on. He may...
Thanks for that Robin - I enjoyed your site very much and followed the link to http://www.flintknapping.co.uk
Very interesting all round. I wonder if my hands could take the bashing though!!
You can get little tiny zip lock bags from supermarkets - they're intended for sweets or snacks in kid's packed lunches. They are perfect for making up your own brew bits.
Take them home with you after use, wash them, turn them inside out to dry and re-use.
Just watched this programme on the BBC iPlayer.
As well as being a generally interesting show, there was a short 'bushcrafty' segment that might be of specific interest to the forum users.
The presenter spent 24 hours on the island of Coll with a flint knapper/experimental archaeologist...
